All we need to do is build a better d we have the 2nd best offense in the league and one of the youngest too. If we build a better d we could shatter records I think which is not gonna happen this year maybe not even next year if we can draft some dmen studs in the next 2 drafts and maybe sign suter this off season. We will be unstoppable |

10 points would be very difficult to make up on the Rangers at this point in the Season. Especially when it seems they can't beat the Rangers. - MJL
I know it would be difficult, however difficult and impossible are two different things. And as unlikely as it may be the rangers could fall into a slump and the flyers could get hot. Who knows? There is plenty of hockey left to play. Plus I'm a glass half full kinda guy |

Thanks for posting this crap. It gives me hope that I can one day make it as a pro-writer b/c whoever wrote that is a moron. - JoeRussomanno
I think most of us are over qualified Joe. Some however are perfect for the position.

I have no doubt that I need some work but that guy was way off base opening the article with "the moves were made to make them a contender"
1 Homer said he didn't know if the team was better or not but they were different. Meaning yes we took a step backward but it will pan out for the future. Otherwise if he came out and said the team will be worse this year than last we know full well what an uprising that would have created.
2 Since when in the heck is a division title in hockey worth a damn? We have enough Division banners in the WFC to tear up and send to a seamstress to make clothes for the homeless in all of PHilly.
If the FLyers win a 1 just 1 cup again I could care less if they ever win the stupid atlantic division title its a hollow achievement. |

I'd prefer getting a d-man with size and some skill like
Cody Ceci
Slater Koekkoek
Brady Skjei
or not physical but you could also go with Olli Maata |

I think trading JVR in a package for JJ would make more sense than for Schenn. The Leafs need a center most and LA is looking for a winger (insert JVR) - clarkysduster

Those numbers would be reliable if Lilja was the only player on the ice. - MJL
Wrong. Unlike +/-, CorsiRel can actually isolate and express a single player's contribution to the team's overall possession game.
Lilja's CorsiRel is -15, which means the team can expect to give up 15 more shot attempts per 60 min when he's taking a shift vs when he's on the bench or in the pressbox. When you're making shot attempts, that means you have the puck -- when Lilja's on the ice, the team is more likely to be without it, most likely stuck in their own zone vs third-tier attackers, chasing the play. To put it in perspective, the next lowest CorsiRel out of the regulars on the blueline is MAB w/ a -4.
Your using shutdown metrics to critique a part time 6/7 defenseman. - MJL
There's no such thing as a 'shutdown metric'. Only measures of pushing the play forward.
And as far as the Winter Classic is concerned, are you really expecting a player like Lilja to be mistake free - MJL
No, just merely adequate. He hasn't been that, especially since he came back from injury.
Do you have proof that Lilja isn't playing over the two Rookies because Laviolette thinks he's terrible? - MJL
Laviolette doesn't think Lilja can contribute to a win more than Gus and MAB. Simple as that. Just how badly he's down on Lilja's game is anyone's guess, but Lilja is at the bottom of the depth chart for sure. |

Not wrong at all. It is impossible to do that. It is impossible for those advanced stats to prove that Lilja is the reason why the team gives up more shots, or why the other team has the puck more. There are 4 other players plus a Goalie on the ice. Because the Flyers are never hemmed in their own zone for extended shifts when Lilja isn't in the lineup.
There's no such thing as a 'shutdown metric'. Only measures of pushing the play forward.
- Tomahawk
That was my term. And a correct term for the opinion's you were giving
No, just merely adequate. He hasn't been that, especially since he came back from injury.
- Tomahawk
That's all he's asked to be. Again, it is the expectations of a player that is the problem if your expecting him to be anything more. And he absolutely has been that all Season.
Laviolette doesn't think Lilja can contribute to a win more than Gus and MAB. Simple as that. Just how badly he's down on Lilja's game is anyone's guess, but Lilja is at the bottom of the depth chart for sure. - Tomahawk
Of course he's at the bottom of the depth chart. That's what he was brought here to be. A depth defenseman. That's the whole point of signing a 36 year old player to a 700K deal, to be a part time 6/7 D man. to have a veteran that you can put in the lineup that won't hurt you and provide as you put it, adequate play. |
