We could trade up The flyers wanna fix the d that's a great way to start - griouxmvp2012
It's not that deep of a draft that cost is going to be high, we need to keep what we have and take the best available player.
And any d-man they take will need to mature & develop it's not going to help anytime soon.
Some scouts have noted it's Nail at #1 and then everybody else, stick to the pick you have. |

There are no defenseman that are rated to have a possibility of jumping right into the NHL?

Wrong. Unlike +/-, CorsiRel can actually isolate and express a single player's contribution to the team's overall possession game.
Lilja's CorsiRel is -15, which means the team can expect to give up 15 more shot attempts per 60 min when he's taking a shift vs when he's on the bench or in the pressbox. When you're making shot attempts, that means you have the puck -- when Lilja's on the ice, the team is more likely to be without it, most likely stuck in their own zone vs third-tier attackers, chasing the play. To put it in perspective, the next lowest CorsiRel out of the regulars on the blueline is MAB w/ a -4.
There's no such thing as a 'shutdown metric'. Only measures of pushing the play forward.
No, just merely adequate. He hasn't been that, especially since he came back from injury.
Laviolette doesn't think Lilja can contribute to a win more than Gus and MAB. Simple as that. Just how badly he's down on Lilja's game is anyone's guess, but Lilja is at the bottom of the depth chart for sure. - Tomahawk
Wait... you're still arguing about our 7th dman? Heaven forbid hes only adequate. What are realistic expectations for a 7th dman? Don't be terrible (which he hasn't been) and eat some minutes so our top 4 guys don't get burnt out ( which he's done). So, I guess my question is why do you have such a problem with him? |

He is god awful, which is probably the problemo with him. |

Not wrong at all. It is impossible to do that. It is impossible for those advanced stats to prove that Lilja is the reason why the team gives up more shots, or why the other team has the puck more. There are 4 other players plus a Goalie on the ice. - MJL
It's entirely possible, but it looks like you need to educate yourself about advanced stats before you try to speak to their limits and applications. You don't have a clue what you're arguing against.
Of course he's at the bottom of the depth chart. That's what he was brought here to be. A depth defenseman. That's the whole point of signing a 36 year old player to a 700K deal, to be a part time 6/7 D man. to have a veteran that you can put in the lineup that won't hurt you and provide as you put it, adequate play. - MJL
We can go around and around and around about this, but you're obviously going to stick to your position no matter how many numbers, facts, pieces of evidence are put in front of you, so there's kind of no point. |

I didn't disagree. It's a crapshoot and could go either way. Both are very talented players with high upside. You can make an argument that Johnson has accomplished more to this point. So what do you need? A defenseman or a Forward?

Compared to who? Pronger carle coburn or mez? Of course he looks awful compared to them. But what about compared to bartulis or walker? Would you rather have one of them as your 7th? For 700k i think lilja has done his job well. |

It's all about perspective. And it goes to what Bill talked about in his blog today. I guess some don't get it. Lilja has done what he was brought here to do. And he hasn't been awful. I know what awful is. The Flyers have had some awful defenseman in the past. He isn't it. |

I will remind everyone. The paragraph below is from the Code of Conduct. Please note that the complete lack of respect shown by many posters for the past few days has not gone unnoticed and a number of people have been banned. Are you planning to join them? Or can you talk hockey without being unpleasant?
No name calling. And you’re not being clever if you say “any moron knows” or “only an idiot doesn’t understand.” You’re being disrespectful. Talk more about hockey and less about each other. |

Rather have a shutdown d man than Johnson who is... mediocre at best defensively |

You could go with forward Tom Wilson.......according to Bob McKenzie some scouts say his game reminds them of Milan Lucic |
