I remember listening to WGR 550 Sabres games as a kid in 1975...the french connection, danny gare, jerry korab, gerry desjardins, bob sauve....rooted for them more than ballard's Leafs back then, and winced as the broad street bullies handed them their ass on a platter for the flyers second straight cup....that buffalo team was better than anything peca/hasek or todays miller/leino has ever produced....and yes today's leafs are just a shadow of their former history...45 years and counting, and still have the second most cups won in NHL History next to Montreal....so yes there are leaf fans that are totally in touch with their team's rich history, as well as other teams' history...that's a true hockey fan...not one that rubs the death of a team's player into the mud..totally classless and IMHO not worthy enough to be a even Sabres fan

If Columbus makes that deal A) the fans would burn GM Howson in efigy & B) The moving trucks will be soon arriving to move the franchise to Quebec or Hamilton or Las Vegas or Seattle or Houston. Sure Calgary is a solid enough enough team to have made a disastrous trade dealing Phanuef & Aulie & still survive but the Blue Jackets would never survive

Nash <-> PIT: Staal, Martin, Despres, maybe another mid-level D-prospect or draft pick?

I think the money works out about equal and it would lose D-strength, but assuming Crosby comes back healthy, it would be uber-cool to see how teams try to match up with top 2 lines of:

Kunitz, Malkin, Neal
Kennedy?, Crosby, Nash

Carter, Pahlsson, Huselius, 2nd
FOR
Grobovski, Schenn, MacArthur, Kadri, Conditional 1st

If you think about it this deal is definitely in favor of both teams AND it doesn't breach the cap for either team. Pahls and Hus are simply adds to make the deal go through - both are UFA's and clearly Columbus will want to try to get a return for them instead of have them walk free.
It's unlikely they trade those guys for draft picks (because they'll be low) and they aren't getting a one-for-one deal to obtain prospects. The leafs are in a better position to trade guys for picks, so a guy like Armstrong can be had for a 3rd rounder to a team that's looking for a bit more muscle (maybe STL? or PIT?) dunno....
Burke can sign Hus to a small contract for two years, no big deal. Pahlsson can probably be had for REAL cheap as a 3rd line center or just let go (his addition is to obtain Carter).
The conditional 1st would be that the leafs make the conference semi-finals.

Second - just a quick question about the Caps: Have they at all made a serious, high-profile bid on Nash? Carter? With Semin, possibly Neuvirth, Eakin, Galiev, Two first rd picks, and Nash's former junior coach, would the Blue Jackets and Nash listen to something like that? Would Carter?
