congrats, stevie y! why hang onto young, proven nhl contributors under team control for a couple years when you can acquire picks who probably won't contribute for 4-5 years? - OrangeBlack27
Exactly. That dope Yzerman had Matt Walker under team control for three years. What might have been. |

Why don't Tampa just get over themselves already and just give up Lacavalier?
You have Stamkos. I personally get a feeling that St Louis is the real venture leader of that team. Even though they just traded Downie (Which I don't think was a good idea for the return), they're headed in the right direction by drafting Hedman, Connolly and Ashton Carter. Finally trading Lacavlier can only help them right now instead of hanging on to a big ticket that can't seem to get them over the hump these days. - roenick97
With names like Nash, Carter, Ryan, and Getzlaf out there... the return for Lecavalier would be dismal IMO. |

Perhaps he's stock piling picks to trade for a difference maker. Downie is a nice player, but he's hardly a player that they have to have. TB doesn't have a goaltender maybe these picks are going somewhere to land a Bernier or Schneider. |

dating back to the 2007 draft, the only 25-30 overall selections (assuming that's where DET's will be) that have contributed much of anything at the nhl level are david perron and john carlson. |

could be. the jury is still out on this move. but they obviously need help on defense in addition to in goal, are coming off a season where they were within one game of the cup finals and now they're in full on rebuild and trade a 25-year old top 6 forward for a late first?
edit: grade TBD at this point but if he just hangs onto the picks until the draft, this trade is a decisive loss for yzerman, imo. |

No other way to put this: Downie isn't known as the brightest bulb in the batch, which is probably why he's now on his 3rd organization. He hasn't scored enough the last two seasons to justify all the bad penalties and defensive miscues. Even so, I was surprised he got dealt.

Downie is on pace for 17 goals, 40 points, and is a minus 15.... A first, no matter how late is an excellent return for that.... Downie is a slighlty better version of Carcillo. |

So far this year he's traded Kubina a 34 yr old impending UFA, and Downie, that's hardly a full rebuild mode. Still a bundle of talent in TB. I think his plan is to stock pile picks to address areas of need. Goaltender, and defense. |

What Downie lacks in smarts, he more than makes up for in grit and energy. The Colorado team has been lackluster most of the season. |

You're right. I would have no doubt the Habs would take him on in a heartbeat but they're stuck with Gomez due to their own stupidity |
