solid,solid move here mark.
also think about next season, we dont know if Stuart is coming back
but Quincey is a RFA next season, wings could easily bring him back if Stuart decides to leave |

Holy $h!t balls! Wow. First rounder though.... haven't seen that from Holland in a while. I'm guessing that's Stuart's replacement. Anybody know how many years (if any) Quincey has left?
Avs must be pissed about that! Big thanks to Stevie Y. I'm sure the asking price from the Avs would have been a lot higher |

Pretty shocked. Heard on the radio that downie was traded, just got home from work and see Detroit drops the 1st to get Quincey back?? Bit of an overpayment, for a first you would think there could have been some better options, but it's not like he's a bad player. Ah well, shores up the D anyways. |

Considering what guys like Kubina and Grossman got, it's a great deal for Detroit. They get a guy who is much younger that knows the system and is a RFA at the end of the year. The pick will be 25-30th anyway. |

IMO Holland is the best GM in the league. I think you guys have the best GM/coach tandum out there with Holland and Babcock. |

Dude, you realize that 1st rounder is most likely going to be the 30th overall, Unlike L.A's top ten pick. |

Exactly. Overpayment, yeah, perhaps. Will it hurt Detroit in the long run? No way. Looking at it from a long term lens, I think it's a fair trade. |

So in summary:
TAMPA:
In: Detroit's first rounder (likely 28th-30th overall), Sebastien Piche
Out: Steve Downie
COLORADO
In: Steve Downie
Out: Kyle Quincey
DETROIT
In: Kyle Quincey
Out: First rounder, Sebastien Piche
To be honest, I think Detroit's the biggest winner here. A first-rounder (Piche is a throwaway; his odds of making the NHL are slim) is a stiff price, but they improved the team this year and -- most importantly -- added a good NHL defenseman who will still only be an RFA this summer, when Lidstrom may retire and Stuart may leave.
Good for the now, good for the near future. That's more than worth a low first-rounder and a low-end prospect. |

I don't think it went quite like that, if I remember correctly neither would break the top 7 (Lindstrom, Kronwall, Rafalski, Stuart, Chelios, Erickson, Lebda/Lilja). Meech still had options at the time and Quincey didn't (hence the waivers). Maybe I'm wrong though.
My main problem with Quincey is that he's been pretty brittle recently. If he can stay healthy it could be a great pickup.
The fact that they traded their #1 pick is fine since the Wings never have 1st round picks and this pick will practically be a 2nd round pick anyways.
Since they traded it now for another defense man means they probably won't be getting a nice rental forward though. Not sure I like that. Holland usually knows what he's doing though. |
