Guy's been bouncing between ECHL and AHL, not exactly a sure thing.

That was over 20 years ago and they have only had like one 1st round pick in the top 20 of the 1st round in like 20 years. I think he was talking about the Wings having more luck with 2nd to 7th round picks than they do with late first rounders althought the last few years the Wings have traded their late 1st rounders for two 2nd round picks.

The last time the Wings drafted in the top 10---'91 @ #10, Lapointe.

The Wings have drafted one other time in the top 20 since-- Kindl @ #19 in '05 (due to the lockout and lottery).

In '11, they did trade their #1 for 2nd rounders (Jurco, Ouellet, Sproul).
In '10, they drafted Riley Sheahan @ #21
In '09, they traded their 1st for 2nd rounder (Ferraro, Tatar)
In '08, they drafted McCollum @ #30
In '07, they drafted Smith @#27
In '06, they traded their 1st for 2nd rounder ( Emmeron, Mattias, Axelsson)
In 05, we come back to Kindl at #19 (Abdelkader was their 2nd round @ 42)

Giving up a 1st may seem like a lot to some. Not so much to most Wing fans.

The Wings have drafted in the 1st round 10 times in the last 20 yrs. Eight of those 10 picks have been Dmen- Smith, Kindl, Kronwall, Fischer, Wallin, Kuznetsov, Golubovsky, Eriksson.

IMHO, it was Holland rectifying one of his biggest mistakes. I never understood why they waived Q over Meech. Q did a good job stepping in back in the 07 playoffs when the Wings were banged up on the blueline. He never really got much of a chance after that. I know it was believed that Meech was the "better skater" and more versitile--playing up front if needed etc- but to me, he was a poor mans Dandenault.

Considering the Stuart factor and the possibility of Lids hanging them up, they covered their butts with a guy who they drafted and developed, that knows the Wings system. They end up with their Dman with their #1....again.

I always looked at Quincy as one that got away, but Detroit just didn't have room for him at the time. Nice to see them get him back.

Quincy is a good player but Tampa got the best of this trade. Quincy is not worth that.

I disagree.

I think people are really overvaluing that 1st. Considering where it's likely to fall (25th-30th), and looking at the players who've been picked in those spots over the years, the odds that that pick turns out to have any kind of meaningful career in the NHL at all looks like roughly 50-50, maybe a little better. The odds that he'll be in Quincey's league or better might be 15-25 percent.

Sure, Tampa could conceivably hit the jackpot and pick up a Niklas Kronwall (29th, 2000), Corey Perry (28th in 2003), Mike Green (29th, 2004) or James Neal (33rd, 2005). But the odds are against them, and in any case, the player they do pick up probably won't be ready for another 3-5 years.

The "prospect" (Piche) is a body, nothing more. He's already 24 and unless he has an incredible, unforeseen burst of improvement he will top out in the AHL.

Most likely, Detroit got the best player -- present or future -- in this deal. It's certainly not a guarantee, but I think it's a good gamble to make considering the circumstances (improves the team the short and medium terms; provides a potential replacement for Brad Stuart without forcing the team to overpay in free agency; partially covers for the fact that the prospect cupboard on D is sh!t after Brendan Smith).

Can't say i agree with this. Wings have some good defensive prospects in the system (Sproul, Ouellett, Backman, Almqvist, Jensen ect...) but only problem is none of them are close to being ready as none of them play in the AHL yet. No none of them are blue chip prospects at this point but some could become just that in the near future.

Looks like Holland is going to resign Bertuzzi for another 2 years (4.2 million total) or 2.1 million per season. Not sure I like this signing as he is 37 years-old now. He has been an effective player while in Detroit and they need his size, but I'd rather see that money go towards a new top 6 forward (UFA) or towards a salary in a trade in the future.

Holland can let his loyalty towards his veterans sometimes cloud his judgement (READ: Chelios, Maltby, Holmstrom, Draper). Good grief... I'm sick of seeing all the old-timers getting resigned. This team NEEDS to start getting younger or they won't be back in the finals for a loooooong time.
