You know, I was discussing the same thing with a friend yesterday regarding that deal. We all know how Burke feels about signing RFA's, and when he went after Kessel that is what Kessel was. So I'm thinking that he basically told Chiarelli that lets avoid the messy RFA thing, i'll give you the two firsts and a second, this way it goes down as a trade. You in turn owe me a biggie.

I think the Kaberle trade was Chiarelli returning the IOU.

Burke has a lot of respect among the GM's with some notable exceptions of course. It is one of the big selling points on having him as GM.

I know what you're saying, and maybe my original post was too vague. I didn't mean to come across as the type to say here's all our garbage let's get good stuff for it, and here's all our good stuff lets keep it. The just of my post is this, we shouldn't be buyers right now, it's a sellers market so lets capitalize on it. On the outside it might look like we're waving the white flag, but I believe this team will actually do better (like it did when we moved Kaberle and Beauchemin last season....and Blake/Stajan/White/Toskala etc. the season before).

If we are to buy anything before this deadline, the only piece that I think we can get for fair value is Carter. Will I be upset if its Schenn going instead of Gunnarson, no. But right now I imagine a 25 yo 6-2 d-man on pace for 20 points and a + on a piss poor defensive team who isn't shy physically and plays 22 minutes a night for us, signed at 1.35M for this season and next might have more value to a team like Columbus then Schenn who is earning 3M plus.

Reimer has been no better than Gustavsson this Year. There Stats are pretty much identical. People can use the well Reimer had a concussion excuse but hes been back for 2 months now.

I'd love to see Burke fleece another GM and pull off a miracle as much as the next guy, but it just seems bizarre that we'd try to make another earth-shattering trade and re-vamp the roster AGAIN before we'd consider replacing the coach.

The whole roster has changed since Burke has gotten here, with each move making us a better team, and the results still aren't where they should be.

It seems much easier to try a new coach/system than it does to change over an entire roster. Who's to say that even if Burke builds an all-star team we can win?

Wilson had a great roster in San Jose and we all know how that ended.

Definately this stuff goes down. Take a look at all of Burke's assistants. All high end executives that were managers or assistant GM's with other clubs.
