This is even funnier than Dadeadheads comment. Lindstrom plays in a watered down NHL of 30 teams, Orr played with 12 to 16 teams in the league, who by the way played with 3 lines and 6 D and didn't have 5 to 6 health scratches.
Nicklas Lidstrom
NHL 1554 263 876 1139
Bobby Orr
NHL Totals 657 270 645 915
YOU DO THE MATH . - Cometman
Which means he played with more top tier talent on his team year in and year out.
There's about 120 guys in the NHL right now that probably wouldn't have played in the AHL in the 60's and 70's.
7 norris trophys to 8
4 cups to 2
Both once in a generation players.
They will go down in history as 1a and 1b at their position just like Gretzky and Super Mario. |

WOW. Vermette is worth a 2nd rounder.
I have confidence that Boyes could get us a 3rd and 5th now. |

With the way Roy is playing lately... IDK.
Over the long haul of a season.. - Yes Carter is better.
But right now. Contract now. Contract in the future - I think Roy is slightly better than Carter |

Well thats your opinion.
20 years playing at the level that he's played at, won everything a player can win, and considered the best d-man in the last 35yrs. |

Carter = .74 pts / game
Roy = .79/game
Roy is cheaper and is more productive

I think Bobby Orr is the greatest defenseman in history. There is a wide gap between him and whoever the second best is.
That said, I agree that Nik Lidstrom is a generational defenseman and one of the all-time greats. Certainly the best of his era.
Bobby Orr is the best. Lidstrom is in the next tier below, with guys like Ray Bourque, Doug Harvey, Larry Robinson and Denis Potvin. All of whom are also all-time greats. |

Goose is worth a 2nd - HotSauceBlueChs
A 1st at the end of the round is basically a 2nd.
A 1st is clearly a good move, a 2nd (which will be pick 50-60) is collecting draft picks for the sake of it and they might as well negotiate with him or carry him through the rest of the season.
I'd actually prefer Darcy hang tough on this one. |

Who is a Goaltender that has had his share of time in the NHL as Kipper's back up wasn't he?
he is a capable NHL back up goaltender. |

The problem is trying to compare players from different generation.
The further back you go the player talent on each team increases.
An 80 point season in todays game is like 120 point season back in the 80's. |

I'd give Orr the slight edge because he modeled a puck-moving/scoring dman, but you are pretty much dead on.
Players today are much faster and generally in much better physical shape than they were in the 70's. I remember getting by the guards and standing near the locker rooms at the Aud and seeing players smoke cigarettes between periods.
What made Orr unique was his friggin' blazing speed & puck movement.
d-men that scored like that were a unheard of
Orr was just magic to watch- |

We say Orr is teh best because we never saw him and can only base our opinion on three things. Stats, Highlights snippits of video, and the tall tales of our grandfathers. Revisionist history is so skewed from reality sometimes.
Lindstrom was great. Period. Who cares if he is better than Orr. its a moot point. |
