Which means he played with more top tier talent on his team year in and year out.
There's about 120 guys in the NHL right now that probably wouldn't have played in the AHL in the 60's and 70's.
7 norris trophys to 8
4 cups to 2
Both once in a generation players.
They will go down in history as 1a and 1b at their position just like Gretzky and Super Mario. - dadeadhead
No, they won't.
How many +124 seasons does Lidstrom have? How many +50 seasons does he have? How many times did he lead the NHL in points? How many times has he been top ten in points?
Give me a break. Bobby Orr is the greatest player of all time at any position. Wayne Gretzky is the only other person even in the debate. Nick Lidstrom is a fine player, but he isn't even close to Orr. |

Gretzky only has great numbers because he played for so long. I mean almost 1500 games your bound to have almost 2900 points. |

Good job guys. You've convinced me.
We should trade Gaustad for Bobby Orr.

I'd give Orr the slight edge because he modeled a puck-moving/scoring dman, but you are pretty much dead on.
Players today are much faster and generally in much better physical shape than they were in the 70's. I remember getting by the guards and standing near the locker rooms at the Aud and seeing players smoke cigarettes between periods.
What made Orr unique was his friggin' blazing speed & puck movement.
d-men that scored like that were a unheard of
Orr was just magic to watch- - Purple Eagle
Have you seen the build or should I say lack of on todays average NHLer. The game was played much tougher back then and they skated with three lines...not four....So your much faster and better shape thing doesn't hold much water. Can you imagine Orr with carbon fiber boots and tuuk blades, with a carbon fiber stick with a big banana on it? Rather than old four pound leather boots with metal blades and a dead straight wooden Sher-wood . You people need to get real . 30 teams with 20 players plus 4 health scratches, 720 players deep, compaired to 12 teams with 17 players or the best 204 player in the world at the time. |

This thread is the only time in my life I've ever seen any NHL defenseman compared to Bobby Orr. It's laughable. I don't even think Red Wing fans would try and pump Lidstrom like this. |

Good points.... that is why it is hard to compare with the different eras. |

Why would you compare a D-man Lidstrom to a Forward like Gretzky?

They also didn't wear helmets and they didn't check as hard. BFD. You put anyone of those old timers in todays game and you have a DB like Lucic take him out, for good, end of a potential storied career.
Back in the Day they only had 6 teams, so every team won.

Which accounts for his incredible dominance over his peers as evidenced by the following:
+30
+65
+54
+124
+86
+56
+84
+80
Or did goalies just take their mask off when Orr skated past everyone else to shoot on them? |

I'll hear the Wayne Gretzky / Bobby Orr debate all day and fully respect anyone backing the great one, but Nick Lidstrom is so far below those two it is laughable to talk about. |

All of this started with talk of poor draft classes.
Comment was made that no one in that draft class would make the HoF.
Several argued that Chara would.
Convo turned to comparing elite defensemen.
When comparing elite defensemen, of course someone pipes in with Bobby Orr.
Everything gets muddled because we're comparing players with different styles, in different eras, who played for very different amounts of time.
And here we are. Wonderful. |
