Five years ago today, the Flyers acquired Braydon Coburn. Early last month, the Flyers asked me to write an article for their official site, slated to run today (which is as the eve of a game in Coburn's hometown of Calgary).
It's now online.

Stupid me. After that rousing last second goal and OT win vs the Jets (in what was probably the biggest win of the year) I honestly thought they'd put forth a good effort last night and come out with a solid win. I'm such an idiot.
Before last night's game I thought all we needed was for Bryz to find his soul, and we'd be in for a nice playoff run. Additional players need not apply.
Now, I think Homer HAS to go out and add some veteran juice. Maybe there's another Lappy or Simmonds he can pry away from some team.
Coots and Read have hit the wall. Briere's forgotten how to score. Voracek can't finish to save his life. And half the forwards are too busy rushing up the ice to remember their defensive coverage responsibilities. This team desperately needs one good vet on the bottom six.
Who that could be I have no idea. But man, it would be so great if Lappy and Pronger could still play.

Thanks, Bill. Excellent article.
I know Coby's struggled here at times, but that's the defenseman's lot. I hope to see more of his shots getting through and success for both him and the team. |

So with the Flyers current situation (which I consider to be); A playoff team with little or no chance at making a cup run, granted at the outset of the season we all expected this to be the case but not for lack of goaltending and defense, but rather an innability to make up the goals lost from Richards and Carter, amazingly we've ecclipsed that by a wide, wide margin.
Of our "tradeable assets" Which wouyld you be most likely to move and why?
I think moving Voracek would probably be a good move. He'd command pretty nice value, he's likely to get a substantial raise that would push him out of affordability for the flyers going forward, the lone caveat there being that he's an RFA at years end, so if we offered and someone else bested it we could stock the cabinet with some nice picks.
Would anyone here NOT do Voracek, Bob, and Gustavson/comparable prospect/pick suite for Weber?
I know Weber's not going anywhere. I know this wont happen. I'm simply trying to discern what value our fans place on an expensive (although potentially very good) Goaltender in the backup capacity, a stud winger who shows flashes of brilliance and then seems lost in the woods, and a defense-prospect that probably wont ever crack our lineup.
Am I too high? Too Low? What are your thoughts? |

75% Crap IMO. He is guessing, just like I had a nervous feeling in my stomach when I heard Couturier was scratched last night... I had a feeling. Its odd timing being scratched now, and right before a game. And no-one saw him get injured, or heard anything about it, or suspected it... This is most likely a coincidence, but there is always a chance Homer has something pending... Like Homer may have to make a cap space trade before making this trade, and Couturier being the main piece of a trade, he doesn't want him to get hurt...
Quick poll for everyone... If Homer made a move... and lets say it was up to you to decide who to include... Which player would you rather keep. Schenn or Couturier? |

If Philly offered up Gus and Voracek for Brown would everyone be asking why don't we have a setup man?
Voracek can pass and Brown is more of a grinder. Don't we currently have a few players that fit the same mold? Yes we need help on the PK but don't we also need help in the FO dot? Where would he play?

Give me Cooties or give me death.
His size, Hockey IQ, relative youth (even to Schenn) and contract 1.375mm vs 3.110mm for Schenn (courtesy CapGeek.com)
Couturier is the second on my untouchable list to G, followed by Simmonds, probably. |

Neither, cause any move involving either of them would mean blockbuster--and blockbuster usually means high salaried--and high salaried means more pieces being moved, which is unlikely.
Sorry for the realist answer. |

I would keep Couturier, and at no disrespect to Schenn, but only if i had to choose.
I think both can be a #2 center potentially, (Schenn possibly a #1A center), but I love Couturiers game & I think if he fills out more, he also becomes that big shutdown guy we could also crave. |

If all it took were those three players, I'd personally carry the three of them to Nashville (all at once, to boot). Nashville's going to want a whole lot more than that. |

Personally, I'd expect Poile (he's their GM, right?) to respond to a call for Weber with, "Well, how about Giroux?" So, yeah, not going to happen. |
