Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Comeback, Hartnell, Bryzgalov, Deadline Eve - bmeltzer
i missed most of the game, but i gotta say i continue to be impressed by jake. and this writeup seems to indicate he really helped fuel the comeback. aside from the size, skill and speed, he really seems like one of the hardest workers and one of the most overt "team guys"
i really hope they keep him around. id love to see him develop. |

Don't expect you to concede anything. Agree that the coverage was poor. My guess is that if you asked Mezzy if he should share the blame he'd say yes. It appears the Flyers need to change their focus from trying to win games to "let's do everything possible to make Moonbeam look good". If the Flyers get to the point of not having any defensive breakdowns, then they can make do with $500,000 journeyman. Until then, I expect the highest paid goalie in hockey to start standing on his head. - 2731color

I'm with you there. He's no superstar, but he's a solid player akin to a Talbot. And definitely a team guy...
He and coots and someone else were doing a football-type huddle while watching the shootout...something you just don't see often and definitely indicative of team members that get along with one another, and that will lead to fighting for one another. |

Isn't that what we already have in JvR - a young power forward who, unlike Fraser, can skate well and who definitely knows how to score? JvR is still only 22. Power forwards, like defensemen, don't usually put it all together until their mid 20's.
Patience.
I'd hate to trade away the next John LeClair. - 77rams

I've said before that originally I thought that Bryz's candor and sense of humor were refreshing when compared to last year's post game's which were a cross between a wax museum and funeral palor. I'm thinking of the scintillating banter supplied by Richie and Carts. Anyway, the more that Bryz spoke the more goofy he'd sound. Some of it's the language difference but most of it is him. His wiftiness would go over a lot better if he was stopping more pucks. I'm not proud but now I'm compelled to tease him. |

I got to see a lot of Oleksiak at NU, def has some potential. Some up and down games but 6'7'' is an even more commanding of a presence in college hockey - Coopaloop
Never heard of Oleksiak. Can anyone give me a little backround on the kind of player he is? |

I'm not conceding anything.
My point was that Stajan should not have been allowed to be in that position at all. The coverage was poor. Whether the save was made or not shouldn't be the only focus of attention and if Meszaros was exaggerating his displeasure with the goal, then he should accept his share of the blame. - 77rams
Fair enough. However, you are going to give up shots as a team. Should they have stepped up? Yeah, but it doesn't change the fact that it should have been saved. It was a harmless 41 mph partially fanned "slap shot" with no a screen. Blame the D if you like, but that was pathetic by Bryz and inexcusable. It's not Mezzys fault he couldn't make a simple save. Time for Bryz to stop feeling sorry for himself. |

I like the fact that they didnt rollover and die last night ...BUT i would still like to see another goalie brought in by tommorow. I dont know who or how ..but it would be reasurring to have another guy ready in case these two poop the bed worse then they already have. |

Bringing in another goalie suggest that you have no confidence in Bryzgalov (which may be the case). If thats the route the Flyers want to pursue then they should be ready to handle all the headaches that will come with it from Ilya. Now maybe that is something that would force him to be traded. As of today the Flyers still have 8 years and $41M commitment to him. Just have to hope it doesnt blow up in your face. |

If I'm Holmgren I just let Bryz take the reigns and go with it. He should get better over time IMO. Going out and getting another goalie will worsen Bryz's confidence. The only thing I want this team doing on deadline day is trading for a solid 3rd line checking player. EX, Gaustad, Ott, |

I find it amusing, let's bring in another goalie, any goalie. Don't know who, or don't know what to give up, somehow another goalie will be brought in and magically everything will improve.
I doubt the Isles are giving up Nabakov, when they're still in it. Why would Col give up Giguere is signed for another year at a lower cap hit then Bob? Ah yes, there is always Roloson, he sure has been stellar this year. Just going to have to ride Bryz.

I'd be willing to give up a 2012 2nd (the one from the Meszaros deal) and MAB or Gustaffsson. I'm not sure if that would get it done but you never know. I would also be able to part with 2013 1st rounder if it gets the deal done. |

I have no idea what the market is like. I'd be willing to go high but the fly in the ointment is the goaltending. If it doesn't improve, Gaustad or anyone else won't be enough to make a difference. |

Gaustad IMO isnt worth much. His cap hit his too high (along with the asking price) and your adding a piece that will only play limited minutes. I dont see him making much of a difference. I would pass. The Flyers have given up four draft picks already. To me the negatives outweight the positives in acquiring Gaustad. |

I agree, the goaltending definitely needs to be picked up for a move like that (trading for Gaustad) to have any justifiability. If Bryz doesn't pick it up in the next week or two I would hand Bobrovsky the reigns. Bob usually plays about a game out of every 5-10 and he usually plays solid. If you were to give him some consecutive starts and let him get into a groove/rhythm he would be much better. |

If I am not mistaken Gaustad does play the pk which would be helpful. He is also a good face-off man and can shutdown the other teams top lines. If I was Holmgren I would be very interested in acquiring Gaustad. |

I think he does alot of things well but I dont know what the asking price is going to be. Im not willing to trade any more picks to acquire a player who will play limited minutes at that cap price ($2.3M UFA). |
