I still think the goaltending will work itself out,that unit Toronto has on defense right now is just too damn slow to recover from mistakes,save that great skating young kid in gardener.

Also i find that because of its lack of mobilty it really hampers toronto,s pretty quick forwards.And do to the overall lack of size up front they need to be able to counter with their biggest asset which is speed through the netual zone.Kinda like what montreal was doing last season

Yup. When they were successful this year they were in warp speed. When they look terrible they are extremely slow. These last 10-12 especially they look so slow they make the the phrase "skating in quicksand" look like lightspeed. IMO the biggest problem is not making adjustments. They are not playing to their strength. When they get shut down they just keep banging their head against the wall. They haven;t been able to figure out how to use their speed. that falls squarely on the coach. Teams keep traping them and they keep playing the same way. Nothing changes.

How would you suggest they use their speed when teams are shutting down the neutral zone?

It's easy to throw out punch lines like 'they are not playing to their strength', or 'they haven't been able to figure out how to use their speed', but not once have I heard you suggest a plan they can implement.

That defense toronto has is probably the slowest in the league,it doesnt react quick enough in the defensive zone to trap opposing teams forcheckers,thus breaking down any type of trap they would be putting up in the neutral zone

Is the trade deadline over yet??? I think the pressure is getting to them. Once it's over they'll relax and all will be well.

The only way the leafs are going to get out of their slump is with great goal-tending for the first period of a hockey game, not average. Although you can't blame Riemer for the loss, he didn't play amazing either. Its very hard and discouraging to play in front of goalies that aren't making the saves that should be made. If Riemer had stopped one of those first two goals the team would have been energized and some what confident in there goalie. So hopefully Gustavsson can play an amazing first 20 to pull this team out of this slump tonight

JML and Gardiner (eventually)...... And our first pass out is fine when they are going. JML, Gardiner, Gunner and especially Franson do it well. Our D isn't the problem. Its systmes. We get hemmed into our zone far too much. they can't get it out even when they get control because the system has them playing far too low in the zone and thus they are allowing the opposition Dmen to pinch far too much and far too easily which enables them to keep the puck in more than any other team. Playing the wingers too low also doesn't allow them to create speed. It's a massively flawed system that is now in it's 4th year of epic failure with no adjustment.
