Burke will never fire his friend Ron, it would be a mutually agreed resignation for PR purposes....and Eakins isn't going anywhere until at least the summer...if Wilson does go before season's end, Rick Dudley will take his place for now IMO

They are the "core". just b/c they are UFA does not mean they are leaving. If that's the case we can count on getting Crosby in 2 years, since he's a UFA and Kessel and Lupul will be gone
- Boosinicka

it also doesn't mean they are staying. it goes both ways.
if the leafs are building to win in the next couple years-which burke has repeatedly said he is, then the plan is obviously to have those players as the 'core'.
if his plan is to win in 4-5 years then his planned is flawed because theres no guarantee his 'core' will be in tact.

i appreciate the optimism.
but ottawa and florida completely retooled in the off season and got results.
is that a testament to good gm work or the fact that both those teams hired highly touted coaches rather than sticking with a coaching formula that doesn't work.

- Barx

Honestly, I think they're both very lucky this season. Plus look at Florida's division, NOBODY is playing well (Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg). Ottawa is getting out of this world play from Karlsson, and Spezza has jumped to the top of league scoring. Plus Anderson was playing amazing for most of the year. Ottawa has a lot of rookies playing VERY well, like Greening for example.

I agree. Plus, the team isn't really THAT far off being a good playoff team. We held a playoff spot for a VERY long time this season. As a young team they started to lose it a little bit and haven't been able to keep the composure and confidence up. As they mature as a group I think that will change.

Our team is playoff caliber right now if they were to play THEIR game every night. But as a young team they go into the game thinking "how do we play in order to beat this team" and that gets them in trouble. they need to play their game and not worry about how the other team plays. If they can play their speed game then it has OTHER teams thinking, what do we need to do to beat the Leafs, which is how it was for quite a lot of the season, even leading into February for the most part.

It's the youth factor in my opinion. Lack of consistent confidence and composure.

- Domaju

No they are not playoff calibre....... don't get confused with what transpired the first part of the season.

The first part of the season, teams do not play a tight checking game. After the All Star break is when the real hockey begins. The tight checking etc etc. The Leafs of this year cannot handle the tight checking.

And most importantly........ you need a goaie to be a playoff contender

both those teams reacted immediately with a complete overhaul-they didn't need several years to gel.
the respective gms recognized the holes and the flaws and acted accordingly...Burke has failed miserably the past 6-9 months to address the teams needs. From coaching to goaltending to grit.

So the entire first HALF of the season means NOTHING??

I disagree completely with that. Yes, we need to get better goaltending...which we WERE. And I agree we're having trouble with the checking now, but I don't think the tight checking just instantly gets better after the all star break. It's pretty much there by mid-late November in my opinion.

Even after the All Star break we were still playing well. Then February we just fell apart for some reason. I think with consistent confidence and composure will come consistent goaltending and a better defensive game which turns into more consistent winning.

its also not as easy when 95% of our players are 20-26.

Florida yes, Ottawa no.

Ottawa is all luck right now with their rookies playing amazingly. I'll admit you're right if Ottawa can play this well or better next year too.

kessel, lupul, phaneuf are all gone by then....who is the 'core'?
- Barx

again...youre misunderstanding me...we should be competitive in 1-2 years, and 3-4 years be legit cup contenders. If we continue to improve. Those said players would hopefuly see a winning trend by year 2-3 to decide to stay.

*hopefully
