INJURY UPDATE: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on James van Riemsdyk: "James will have surgery on Mar. 6 to repair a broken bone in his left foot. Dr. Steven Raikin will put a plate in to help with the healing process. James will be out 4-6 weeks." - Scottie Upshall

expanded wildcard is official and because there are not enough off days built into the schedule this year, the team with the better record will start on the road for two and then back home for three.
next year when they can make a schedule with off days built in, they'll go back to 2-2-1 for the lds. - OrangeBlack27
Oh right. I heard about the additional 2 team thing yesterday. Didn't hear about the change in the LDS format though. Hate that 5 game format either way. Possible travel all the way back across the country for one game? Dumb. |

They want more teams involved. Sheesh. Every league seems determined to make the regular season completely unimportant. |

The idea is that you should be rewarded more for winning your division rather than the wild card, which I agree with.
But they could have kept the current system and only given the wildcard one (or zero) home game in the LDS. |

it's truly amazing. play 162 games only to go to a one-game play-in? it's particularly a joke in the AL where a team usually wins the wildcard by 5 or 6 games. can't believe 162 games isn't enough to tell you who's the best four teams in each league. |

they need to go back to the winner of the al playing the winner of the nl in a best of 7.
/scoob'd.
but really, that's what's most fair. never happen, though. |

The AL has 6 really good teams this year. NYY, BOS, TB, DET, LAA, TEX
I bet there will be a 90 win team that still doesn't make it.
Your point makes sense though, there will be a season where a team with 84 wins eliminates a 95 win team in a one game playoff, and people will go apepoop. |

The downside to that is you have thirty teams and maybe only five would have anything to play for in September.
It was great when there were two eight team leagues.
I wonder if teams will do the clubhouse celebration when they clinch a birth in the wildcard game?!

This extra wildcard is huge for Orioles fans. These Birds will be in a Pennant race all summer! |

They will be in the race for the 2013 top pick ... A race they will blow by, again, winning meaningless games in September. |

Easily A.
B is so far away it makes me kinda sad.
It's amazing how incompetence can crush a fanbase. |
