Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 3/2/12 - bmeltzer
Could Kimmo Timonen ever be considered to have his number raised as a Flyer? Could be a silly question to some but the Flyers have had very little luck by find a true number 1 goaltender and it's starting to look the same with Flyers defenseman. In the interest of Mark Howe Day coming, Only Desjardins and Howe himself seem to be the best defensemen we've had in franchise history. Chris Pronger also could have been considered one but his career here was cut short, which only leaving Timonen next in line. |

id say the only chance he'd have is if he wins a Cup here |

Time isn't really the problem. Patience is the issue. JVR has basically lost an entire Season to injury. Players are individuals. They develop differently as individuals. It's why examples such as John LeClair have been given. JVR is what 22? There is plenty of time. - MJL

I have to agree. The sad part about that is age and the end of his contract is catching up with him. As crazy as this may sound, I hope the Flyers hang on to 6th place (I believe we're in 5th now) and take on a team from the south pacific. Even if that team is the Washington Capitals. In my opinion taking on one of these teams is our best chance at making it to the second round and then we could possibly get on a roll and build from that roll. |

Oh, you're right. One of my favourite Dmen ever and forgot him. Same situation as Pronger though, Coffey's time with the Flyers was cut short.
When the heck did he wear the "C" though?? |

97' Sir... I believe when Lindros was injured, he wore the "C".
Coffey was a great offensive defenseman, he was obviously well past his prime when he was in Philadelphia. |

I think he did when Lindros was injured, either that, or that is a picture from a pre-season game. Not sure. |

Flyers retire numbers of players who played their key years here that earned them induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. If Timonen were to be inducted, it may be considered. But is he a HOF caliber defenseman? |

Actually looking at his numbers, his offensive numbers are still pretty good. It must have been the games he was limited to play that may have kept the Flyers impatient with him. |

He had a good year in 2000 with the Canes. 40 points in 69 games for a 39 year old is a heck of a season.
Coffey had some monster years in Detroit a few years before he got to Philly, he never approached those totals after. Just a case of Father Time. Eventually it catches up to everyone. |

Because if you're going to say
In the interest of Mark Howe Day coming, Only Desjardins and Howe himself seem to be the best defensemen we've had in franchise history.
then you have to look at ALL the d-men who have been Flyers. Otherwise, you should say, "...we've had in franchise history that I have bothered to research." |

Paul Coffey is the reason why I'm a Flyers fan today. As some know I'm from the Windsor/Detroit area and he was a pretty big deal. When he left Detroit and had a short stint Hartford, I followed to Philly. Once anyone has gotten into the habit of watching Lindros and LeClair play, who could leave? |
