There weren't many faceoff specialists traded. And the one player that could be considered that, Gaustad, went for a very high price. Can't trade for what's not available. - MJL
No kidding. I'm aware that the market was thin but I thought he might have swung something. There was a name or 2 out there, obscure guys who's names escape me, that might have been an ugrade. I don't necessarily dislike the 2 defesemen he got but a faceoff specialist/penalty killer was needed. Nashville went all in for Gaustad... it will be interseting to see how it works out. As for the Flyers, I can see our smaller centers getting ground down this year. |

Here are the Rules for a buyout for a player over 26 years of age.
Take the actual salary due for each remaining year
Take the Averaged Player Salary (cap hit) for the current contract
Calculate the buyout amount (as described above)
Spread the buy-out amount evenly over twice the remaining years of the contract
Take the number in No. 1 and subtract the number in No. 4. This is the "buyout savings."
Take the cap hit from No. 2 and subtract the buyout savings from No. 5.
This calculation is done for each year, meaning the buyout cap hit is not necessarily the same for all years. It can even be negative, meaning a team can receive a credit. - MJL
Thank goodness you're here to make sense of everything dealing with the cap |

Like I said, look at who was traded, and you get an idea of who was available. You can't force a team to trade someone. Or if they were available, the price was too high. I'd much rather they obtain that type of player in the off season, then overpay for it at the deadline. I'm quite certain that the Flyers will be in the market for a 4th line Center in the off season. There's tons of names out there every deadline. Doesn't mean much.

that is pretty complicated
interesting though. i didn't know that the cap hit actually played that big a part in the calculation |

Yes, it is. That's why you use the tools available such as the Calculators on Capgeek. Rather then guess what it is. They do all the work for you.

definitely a good point, why try to do the heavy-lifting when there are good tools conveniently at your disposal. i guess i just thought i knew what the rule was and that it wasn't all that complicated
apparently though the rule i almost understood (2/3 instead of 3/4) is only for the actually buyout (what the player is paid), not the buyout cap hit |

The #1 rule I've found when dealing with the CBA. Is assume from jump street that it's going to be complicated. Some of the stuff written in there, I couldn't understand it even if I wanted to.

Never been a big fan of briere. Don't get me wrong I love his playoff game. Far as cap wise he is the Highest paid forward. Yet I never thought he really lived up to the contract. I thought they shoulda moved him in the off season. I don't agree with Bill on one thing is the moving around with his line. Yes it may have happened a little but it was more cause he just didn't gell with anyone. Go look at the second half of last year his number were not all that great. He will be 35 next year its time for him too go. They need to stop Floating the young guys names out there like JVR. |

It's obvious that you can't force a trade. Agree, that there will be more centers available and they will be cheaper at the end of the year. As an unwashed fan without a full appreciation of the market and with apparently no concept of the future implications that overpaying for assets now might have on the orginization, I'm simply looking for immediate gratification. Sorry for my lack of patience but I've been waiting for a third Cup since 1975. It's just getting harder and harder to talk about next year's needs. In this town, next year usually turns into this year. |

SO the Flyers called up Wellwood. Scrabble must really be in the doghouse with Lavi.

Dude's game is largely north-south and that too its largely to north from south and never the reverse. That might explain the +/- in such limited time. |

Yup, celebrate a non-Irishman - ob18
I wish we could just cut the false pretense of "Irish pride" and call it what it is: a second Mardi Gras with only green beads. I'll also accept "Barnaby's Is Having Happy Hour All Day Day". |

Meszaros, Coburn, and Timonen all faked injuries today to get out of practicing. Holmer called them "maintenance days". But we know better.
