Interesting that Gustafsson was called up. Holmgren said yesterday Timonen, Meszaros, and Coburn all had maintenance days.

Even if one of the D-Men is banged up and can't play tonight, isn't that what Lilja is there for? He's been exactly what Flyers signed him to be. That 6th/7th depth defenseman.

I see Edmonton, and San Jose have really used the shutout wins over the Flyers as springboards to go on major runs.

Win the game tonight, 2 months without consecutive wins is bordering on the absurd.

When you have more then one of your regular defenseman who is banged up and could possibly not be available to play. You need more then one defenseman ready to play in case. As Bill said, both Timonen and Coburn are banged up. So that's two defenseman. Lilja is one defenseman. So they would need another to be available also. Hence the recall of Gustafsson.

The Flyers, as it is for all NHL teams, are limited to 4 call ups after the trade deadline. Why would they waste one, if all they needed was one extra defenseman, which they already have.

We don't know that Timonen or Meszaros will be out for an extended period of time. That's jumping to conclusions. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But the "out indefinitely" is probably just a vague response to how the Flyers, and Holmgren have been criticized after the fact, for giving early prognosis that has later proven to be innacurate. If so, that is a good move on their part to do so.
