Small market clubs would claim that the larger markets would have an even bigger advantage (as compared to today, big market teams do still have advantages) in being able to buy their way out of mistakes. I'm sure the big market teams would like this idea, but it wouldn't go the other way.

There would still be a salary cap, it would just give teams the option of clearing mistakes off their cap. It wouldn't happen as much as you would think with big contracts. Owners are in business to make money, not eat millions upon millions of dollars.

i would love to have the NFL structure where only a certain part of the contract is guaranteed

NHL would have to break the Union like the NFL did to the NFLPA.

Well just applying every day life and logic to the equation. If a person has a contract in any field, the only responsibility to that person is that they are paid. Any business or entity that wants to get rid of a person for whatever reason should be entitled to do so without repercussion.

most employment in the country is "at will" meaning the company can let you go at any time. i agree why should they get full protection

And only one team has Zac Rinaldo. The NHL leader in penalties drawn and penalties taken per 60 mins.
- bradleyc4

Carcillo 2.0, except he hasn't taken (m)any team-killing penalties.

Um, you're in the NJ PBA, right? Or were? How would that go over if you were let go "for any reason" just because the guy in charge was a jerk?

If I got a call tomorrow and said I was being released from my job, but I will be paid my salary in full, I wouldn't have a problem with it. In fact I would encourage it. I would go out and get another job, and have two incomes.

NFL rules are such that the salary is taken away (same as, "You're fired."). Quite different from being released and still paid, no?

I will miss Czechie playing tonight.

He has lately become one of my favorite forwards.

At least Simmonds is still playing.

Yes. I'm saying if an NHL team wanted to release a player to clear cap space, and a contract slot, they would still have to pay said player, how is that unfair to anyone?

So the Flyers would just throw 25 million dollars for one season of Teemu Selanne? Ummm.... no they wouldn't. Not by a long shot.
- PLindbergh31

It was an exageration... And yes they would be willing to take chances on older players... maybe not 40 year old Selannie, but what about signing a 30 year old to a 10 year contract... there is a 90% chance (there is your percent crim )that he wont finish that contract, but if the Flyers get 6 good years, and dont have to worry about the cap... they will pay the last 4...
