My problem is I would rather watch the movie then read the book. Much faster and easier to understand for myself. My imagination only works so well... - stveshdy
I'm definitely more of a film fan. I've been trying pretty hard to ignite the literature fan in me, though (or rather, my counterpart has been trying). The last one I finished was Slaughterhouse 5, now I understand all the acclaim for Vonnegut. |

You just have to keep plugging away. There is no movie version of the book I'm reading. It takes place prior to the first Star Wars movie (what is now called "A New Hope"), published before the prequels. It's not hard to imagine a younger Han Solo taking his lumps before he becomes the person we see in the Tatooine Cantina, for instance.
Of course, if other genres are your druthers, then go with them. Bo suggested Harry Potter (I do, too) along with the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. - Flyskippy
Seen the movies. Thats the problem nothing gets my interest. Only books I like to read are autobiography. |

+1, I wish I were into reading more in the past. I've gotten a lot more into it the past couple years, but I'm a tragically slow reader when it comes to novels and the like. - BulliesPhan87
I really need to get back in the habit of reading again. I got the Kindle a couple Xmases back, but haven't taken to it seriously yet, although it is pretty well stocked.
I think part of it is that, when I read current books, they are so poorly edited that I just get so irked by obvious errors and it takes the joy out of it.

If I could do that I think I would read more books. I can read something 25xs and still have no idea what's going on sometimes. I have a hard time comprehending. - stveshdy
I like to think that I am fairly intelligent. Trying to read parts of Cicero, aristotle, Locke, Hazlett etc is tough and I am finding myself having to read slower and without distractions. The philosophical stuff isn't so easy to just blaze right through. |

Interesting. I wonder if she'd have trouble trying to be a DO instead of MD as MD's are more focused whereas DO's look at the whole picture. Different schools of medical thought. I appreciate both.
Had my schooling plans worked out, I'd be a DO. - Flyskippy
Her particular talent was diagnostics. She could see all the clues and piece them together. Like House without the drug addiction and frequent misdiagnoses leading to oddly unreasonable grandstanding. |

I would spend the money I had on video games or buying snacks. I didnt read alot of books when I was younger and now im paying for it. Supposively it makes you smarter but that can be overrated. - stveshdy

Then keep reading autobiographies. Eventually one of them will touch on a topic that piques your interest and will steer you to reading a book that is not an autobiography.
Folks have to remember that the movies and TV are relatively new media forms compared to the hundreds of years of book reading that has been done on this planet. The book is a gateway to the imagination that movies and TV cannot touch because, in the words of a young reader, "the pictures are better." |

russian literature is/was my favorite. because i read so much at work (other than being here and elsewhere on the internets), i really don't read much at home anymore. - wilsonecho91
Love Russian lit. Was a Russian area studies major before switching to music. If you haven't read And Quiet Flows the Don by Sholokhov, try it. The sequel The Don Flows Home to the Sea wasn't quite as good for me. |

I would never join one. I read sci-fi and swords & sorcery books (also reading Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd & Grey Mouser series alternated with the Star Wars novels). Those that read those genres mostly post online about it in a club sett-

You reading Game of Kings and the rest? My sister IS reading those and you can imagine it may be her remaining life's work considering how long they are. She is afraid the author will die before finishing the story! |

i say it jokingly, because a lot of people can't stand faulkner. i'm a big nerd though
i haven't read as i lay dying since high school, but i actually just picked up a copy and plan on re-reading it once i finish with what i'm currently reading. and agreed about not loving it all. absalom, absalom is the one that really did it for me |
