That show is awesome. April 1st new season begins. Cant wait. - stveshdy
Very solid adaptation. I'm a book lover, though, so I'll always side with the written word. |

Love Russian lit. Was a Russian area studies major before switching to music. If you haven't read And Quiet Flows the Don by Sholokhov, try it. The sequel The Don Flows Home to the Sea wasn't quite as good for me. - bodiva88
The counterpart would love for me to give Brothers Karamazov (Dostoyevsky) and/or Pale Fire (Nabokov) a read. I say baby steps |

You reading Game of Kings and the rest? My sister IS reading those and you can imagine it may be her remaining life's work considering how long they are. She is afraid the author will die before finishing the story! - bodiva88
No, Fritz Leiber is dead, so it will be easy finishing up his Lankhmar series of 7 books.
As for the two Han Solo trilogies, A.C. Crispin isn't writing Star Wars anymore and Brian Daley passed away.
After those thirteen books are finished, along with Steve Perry's Shadows of the Empire, I am unsure what I will read next. Probably more SW novels/short story collections. |

By the time I hit page 25 that book becomes extinct. I go with TV this way I keep up with the times. |

My dad's an English major. Reading was kind of mandatory. I've passed that onto my son, who is 9 and loving the Harry Potter series. He's on book 2 after starting the series in the fall with Book 1. We try getting him to read a chapter a week, but a chapter a month since March is "Reading Month." |

Game of Thrones? - BoomGoesTheCoburn
Yes, sorry. Game of Kings is the first Dorothy Dunnett novel in the Lymond Chronicles. A barn burner, that series. But not for the faint of heart. Very complex. |

Like right now Game of Thrones is on HBO and I watch it. So when people talk about it Im able to interact in that discussion. If I dont watch the show on HBO I would have zero clue about the show or the book. Very complex lifestyle I have. |

This may be a stupid question but what is the difference between a nook and a kindle? - stveshdy
Nook...Barnes & Noble. Can read any kind of general ebook file (pdf and such) in addition to B&N branded Nook books. can be used to borrow ebooks from the library and to share ebooks free in a limited way (2-week limit) with other nook owning friends (depending on the publisher, who can withhold permission for sharing).
Kindle...Amazon product. Not sure if it reads all formats. Amazon branded e-books. Originally could not read library books, but I hear it can now.
I am obviously a nook owner.
There is also a Sony reader. |

i say it jokingly, because a lot of people can't stand faulkner. i'm a big nerd though
i haven't read as i lay dying since high school, but i actually just picked up a copy and plan on re-reading it once i finish with what i'm currently reading. and agreed about not loving it all. absalom, absalom is the one that really did it for me - FlyerMike18
haven't read that one, i will make a mental note |

Thanks. I got my wife (who reads alot) a nook but she wanted a kindle. I screwed that up but I think thats bc she uses amazon products and now it makes sense. Women and their pickiness.

That's fantastic, Skip! I was an English major, too. I spent my childhood - which is a relative term because I am still a child - reading, and was just blown away by the power of a deep story. All-consuming sometimes. Quite incredible how words on a page can resonate individually; which can be used as a great life tool. But that's enough geeking out. I hope your son enjoys the rest of the Potter series. Very much a gem of the Young Adult genre. |

I found the classic writers pretty universally accessible (although I'll admit that I prefer the abridged War and Peace because French existential philosophy is not my thing). But the late 20th century guys, like Solzhenitsyn were too dense and unremittingly depressing. Yes Russians know how to suffer, but they also have capacity for joy. |

Haha, the only thing that tipped me off was the "afraid the author is going to die before he finishes the series" line. I too share that fear. |

Some of my favorite writers had a penchant for producing the short story. Franz Kafka, Flannery O'Connor, etc. In the same vain, although an acclaimed novelist, I think Haruki Murakami is one the best living writers out there today. |

I have a Kindle Fire. Highly recommend it. I almost went with the Kindle e-reader, but wanted more "gadget" to it. It reads PDF's too, as do the other Kindles. You are correct about the Amazon branded books and yes, it can read library books now, though I have yet to try that out.
I also am an Amazon prime member, so the extra "free perks" helped sell me on it. I have bought two books (Leiber's first two Lankhmar ones) so far. Seamless download, etc. I really like that I can highlight a word in the books and get the definition of them from the included dictionary. Because Leiber uses quite a few archaic words (some aren't in the dictionary, but there is an option to google the word instead). |
