The team certainly deserves the Stanley Cups they have earned. They also deserve a more fanatical fanbase. That's not the fault of the team.
I'd trade a fanatical fanbase for 3 Stanley Cups in the past 17 years in a heartbeat. - Jsaquella

So the NHL should stay in Jersey because people eat in the resturants near the stadium... Woot. Woot. That makes me feel better. Whew... At least the resturants, Gym's, Tanning salons, and Laundries are full. Who care if anyone cares about the team...
No wonder Kovalchuk chose Jersey over LA... No-body cares about the team... He can remain int he shadows without people recognising him... - RooNosHockey
The NHL should stay in Jersey because an owner has them there who is making enough money to justify his staying (he isn't asking to sell or relocate) and he has the wherewithal to support a competitive team. The league isn't going to move a team when the owner has no interest in moving. |

As for attendance, this year has been awesome. There've been plenty of sell-out games and having attended last night's game, I was hugely disappointed by the turnout. I haven't seen that bad of a turnout in a long time, it was puzzling.
Our games against the Canucks and the Winnipeg Jets were way more packed, even our game against Saint Louis was. I think your classy Philly faithful really do a good job at driving the families away. They've learned by now that a Devils-Flyers game is not a good place to bring your kids, and they sell their tickets on StubHub to you-know-who. - Marc87

I wonder what those numbers would be were "Attendance" truly attendance and not deceptively the number of tickets sold. I imagine every team's sellout would be significantly less. |

Not my problem. I really only care about the Flyers. Thats the NHL's problem to figure out. I have in-laws who are from North Jersey with season tickets to the Devils. That pretty much sums it up for me when it comes to their fan base. Although you shouldn't judge one apple from the tree. |

Could you explain this to me. Everyone keeps saying that I missed the point here...
The only thing I see is Jsaq saying he would rather have 3 cups and sit in a half empty arena, with no fan support, then what we have here in Philly....
I could be wrong, but half the fun in being a Flyers fan, is the brotherhood we all share, even if we hate eachother.... |

I agree. But I don't think the team cares who shows up as long as the tickets are being sold. Money is still being made. |

I just want to win. Would be nice to finally have the Flyers hoisting the Stanley Cup. Something I would like to see sometime during my life. |

Very little, sure. I don't think NJ qualifies, however. - bradleyc4
Not saying I am talking about any specific team. Just asking a broad question. what do you consider "very little" ? |

I was onboard until this. IF a Flyers/devils game is what you say than that is an indictment on your fans for not buying the tickets to keep the barbarian invaders out. Oh wait I'm stuck in fiction mode and all verklempt , I'll leave you guys to yourselves, talk amongst yourselves talk amongst yourselves.
- JoeRussomanno
haha My trash-talk tendencies came out, disregard that. It really beats me why this one Flyers-Devils game was pretty empty, they have almost always been pretty packed, for years now. And despite my joke, not the Flyers fans' fault. |

You're obviously not trying to grasp any kind of point here. I'm saying when a team's income is coming from 10-15 different sources, not just hockey attendance, the "low attendance issue" you're blowing out of proportion becomes a non-issue. Teams with the same attendance and no other source of income beyond their box office are a different story. |

It would be a percentage relative to the number of seats in the building. Tough to say without first studying the data -- and if we can trust that the data we're getting is accurately reported.
But it all comes down to making money. If a team can make money operating at half capacity all season, more power to them. It's not a sustainable working model, because as attendance dwindles, so will corporate sponsorship.
Like bo said, if a team's owner is content, making money and doesn't want to move or sell; they shouldn't have to. |
