He's an average 42 point a year player, so no he isn't even usually that. If you don't count the rookie season but still lump in the points he's only a 48 point a year guy. - JoeRussomanno
In the past 11 years he's had less than 42 pts. three times..and two of those seasons were shortened by injury. |

Wait, so the amnesty occurring ONCE after a drastic change to the CBA (the institution of the salary cap) is historical basis enough to believe that, against ALL LOGIC (logic you didn't bother to address), there will be one again. The historical basis of Briere CONSISTENTLY providing in the playoffs isn't valid, though? I'm sorry, but this is just plain ridiculous in my mind.
You're putting words in my mouth with this "giving a pass" nonsense. I've flat out said he's been bad. It's been a bad season, and there's no guarantee he'll have a better postseason. All I've said is that it's not impossible for him to turn around a bad regular season to have a good postseason. Scott Hartnell would probably agree it's possible; and the suggestion that Briere's career is over is also purely supposition, until he's played his last game and the numbers are at last tallied.
This isn't about excuses, this isn't about giving passes. This is about execution and results, both of which have not been good for Briere at all this season. The only thing that can be done is for him to get on the ice and try to be better, because there's virtually NO chance that he's leaving the Flyers anytime soon. As a fan of the Flyers and of Briere, the only reasonable course of action for me is to hope he can be better, and to root for my team. - BulliesPhan87
The problem with believing he will perform this year in the playoffs is that in the past he performed through the regular season.
The main explanation to his bad season has been the concussion. Fine but that still doesn't explain his MIA status in big games against the Rags and Bruins this year because the Flyers had plenty games against them before the concussion.
I like you am hoping he will get better and return to form. Unfortunately the player himself isn't giving neither of us reason to believe it and father time is a reality that is bearing down on him. All I'm saying is if the buyout becomes a reality yes you use it first and foremost on him.
For all the logic talk all I am going to say is the guy is showing next to nothing this year. All signs do point towards the end of the road. Again i hope I'm wrong. |

Shortened by injury or not he's broken the 60 point mark 4 times. He has also played past the 60 game mark 8 times. |

The example I used for the possibility of a recovery from poor regular season play, Scott Hartnell, was not due to injury (he played 81 games). I've not said it's the most likely scenario, that I believe he will do it, or any of that. I've only said it's possible.
The logic talk was in response to the amnesty talk. There's no reason to believe there would be one this time around. As for a buyout, I think that would be a tremendously poor option. |

Briere is a 0.786 point per game player over his career, which equates to 64.5 points in an 82 game season.
Did I do the math wrong? |

Sorry if this isn't the intent but I have to take this as a compliment, thanks If you think this is nuts you should read my book when it gets published.
Seriously though I enjoy you guys. Most of my friends don't watch hockey and talking to them is pointless. so... |

There is no reason, as you put it- to believe there will be a buyout but this is the NHL with Gary Bettman as Commissioner so always expect the unexpected. |

Since the lockout and the end of the clutch and grab era, he has 420 pts in 451 games, or 0.93 ppg.
He also has 93 pts in 91 games or 1.02 ppg
Hardly a bust, but also disquieting, for his playoff totals are quite similar to his reg. season totals. Thus, there is likely no switch and he will probably have a down year in the playoffs.
But surely with those numbers everyone not called Crosby or Malkin or Ovechkin has earned some slack. |

There's no denying he's having an off year. But his playoff performance two years ago does argue that he can turn things up at the right time. He definitely surpassed his regular season numbers of that season. I didn't see today's game so I can't comment on that, but I think he's shown signs of improvement over the course of the past couple games. Gotta start someplace |

I am concerned that they have only scored 26 non-empty net goals in 12 games. |

I hear you. But I don't understand something. You've been, and I give you all the credit in the World, a staunch supporter of Illya Bryzgalov in his struggles this year. No matter what anyone said, you believed in the player. And time and again you cited his past success as a player, and steadfastly stood by him, and stated that he will turn it around. Why doesn't Briere deserve the same support. Based on his playoff performances in the past?
