The value in the deal is not what the Caps failed to do with the picks, but what the Flyers might have done with them. - bodiva88
Well, they would have likely wasted the second rounder
But what I mean is, the deal didn't turn out as badly as it could have because Washington(and Dallas, where the 1st rounder ended up) didn't do much with the picks.

Esche was the starter. Burke was brought in to be the back-up, not to compete for the starting job. I also never thought Niittymaki would be more than a back-up, although Esche's behavior could have been better.
Esche had some definite attitude issues at times, but he played very solid for the Flyers. I have no problem with him. - Jsaquella

Well, Esche did act like an immature jerk during the thing with Niittymaki...Unfortunately, I was never that infatuated with Niittymaki. Never expected him to be much more than a decent time splitter or good back-up. |

I think the Flyers are just doomed to never have a full defensive rotation. |

The problem is, the Rangers were the team they were because of inept ownership and management. The Isles were killed by a combination of bad ownership, bad building and awful management.
Who knows, if a couple defensemen stay healthy in 2004 or if Leighton hadn't faltered in 2010, maybe the Flyers win Stanley Cups in those years, too. You can't just guarantee a one off championship season.
Teams that tank, like the Pens did, didn't tank on purpose. Their financial situation prevented them from being able to compete and retain star players. Stuff like would you rather is kind of pointless. I want a team that competes every year and a Stanley Cup. - Jsaquella
DUH! But that wasnt the question.... |

Doubt it. Pronger had the samething happen last year earlier in the season too I believe and we didn't see him until september. Back surgery isn't like getting your knee scoped. Depending on what they are doing, if the disc is protruding into the spine itself or just a nerve steming out dictates the nature of the surgery. Best case scenario he'll be back by June and then he'll need time to get his legs back. |

Doesnt mean anything yet. He could just be getting cortizon shots in his back, but because its on the spine its called a surgical procedure... |

What i hate about these things is the first thing i wonder is---could he have gotten surgery earlier and had shot at coming back for the playoffs instead of waiting a month before making the decision?? |

Best case senario is he is getting a shot in the spine to kill the pain, and will be back in a week or 2.... |

I don't think a shot in the spine is what they meant when they said surgery.
Edi: I have had those and seriously you aren't supposed to go and play NHL hockey afterwards or the pain is going to come right back. |
