Going to start working now on tomorrow's game day blog. I'm actually pulling in double writing duties tomorrow, as I'm subbing for Adam Kimelman on NHL.com's pregame blog and postgame report for the Flyers-Habs game as well as my usual HockeyBuzz blogging duties... plus there's a Stars game at 2 PM eastern and Euro playoffs. Will be a busy day, and I love it!

Back in the 1970s, Sam Pollock, the brilliant GM of the Canadiens, made a deal with the then Kansas City Scouts, which allowed him to swap 1st rounders with them in 1980. At the time, the draft age was 19. January 26 1980 was Gretzky's 19th birthday. meaning he'd be in the 1980 draft pool.
Basically, Pollock was making moves in 1976 to be able to land Gretzky. But the WHA killed his plans. If the WHA and NHL never merged, the 1979 Stanley Cup Champions, coming off their 4th Cup in a row, would have been able to add Wayne Gretzky to their team. - Jsaquella
Pollock was way ahead of the curve. Back in '71, he traded Ralph Backstrom to the Kings for a bag of hammers so LA wouldn't end up in last place instead of the Seals.
Why? Sam swapped for the Seals number one previously. The move guaranteed him the number one overall - Guy Lafleur. |

Drafting Jagr wasn't going to happen because of the questions of if/when he'd come over. If Flyers couldn't trade up for Nedved, Ricci was their second choice all the way. Communism had only recently fallen in the former Czechoslovakia and the situation there was still tenuous.
However, it was a very realistic possibility for the Flyers to trade for Lindros and still hold onto Forsberg's rights. To do that, they'd have had to accept Quebec's demand for Rod Brind'Amour and Slava Butsayev rather than Ricci and the rights to Forsberg plus the rest of the package that was traded.
That's a really fascinating "what if", too. What if they HAD moved Brind'Amour, been even worse for a couple more seasons (remember that Forsberg didn't come over until 1994-95) but ultimately emerged with Lindros and Forsberg instead of Lindros and Brind'Amour. - bmeltzer
A lot to "what if" about back then but one could say the Flyers have righted some serious wrong recently. I have no doubt in my mind that Giroux, JvR, Schenn and Couturier can be something special as a group. Who knows, maybe in 10 years once these young players are established, the league will be talking about the Flyers as many talk about the Red Wings today.
Giroux has Forsberg like vision but could easily become the next Datysuk if he continues to work on his all around game in all 3 zones.
Schenn could easily become a Sakic or Zetterberg type of player. Maybe not as good as either player but he has what it takes to have the same balance of play these types have.
van Riemsdyk doesn't seem to get his nose dirty like the typical Power Forward types. I want to compare him to John LeClair but I'm not sure if I see it just yet. JvR reminds me a lot of Rick Nash.
Couturier I'm hoping becomes a Brind'amour type of player.
I don't think comparing our young players to these types of big names are far fetched by any stretch of the imagination. I think the key here is for the Flyers to stand their ground and not be tempted to trade any of them for the newest hot commodity on the trading block. |
