THIS. Doan's hit and Keith's hit were VERY similar, except Benn got up from Doan's hit and Sedin is hurt from Keith's. Doan is a repeat offender gets 3 games. Keith is clean and has a history of being targeted by the Canucks (we haven't forgotten Burrows' girly hair-pull), yet gets 5.

That said, beyond the injustice of the decision, I'm fine with Keith getting 5 to rest up. Hawks are in the playoffs and will finish where they finish. A rested Duncan Keith makes a better Hawks' team.

- Jam16sugar

Benn played the puck, Sedin was never even in reach of it. A very narrow minded way of looking at the hits....

My biggest issue with Keith only getting 5 games is that Rome got 4 games in the Stanley Cup Final. The standards have gone way down and it makes the Rome suspension that much more unfair.

I don't have a huge issue with it. Extreme for a first timer, IMO. But . . . I even concede that Sedin missing some games due to the hit is punishment enough for him.

I have a huge issue with Shanahan's consistency on the topic.

- John Jaeckel

I don't care about a suspension - one game? - for Sedin as punishment - yes, he apparently is hurt and will miss games anyways - as I do about giving him a suspension to send a message to the league - head hits are not allowed, whether they're blatant like Keith's, or more subtle (tho, IMO, still a targeted hit) like Sedin's.

As a Referee you should take the time to read the entire post. He clearly says "Maybe someone who plays can help me understand". Answer the question without sarcasm please. You have to admit, certain players do go down a lot easier than others.

Totally missed that part. I had my toddler trying to get at the keyboard. It was enough to throw me off.

I think 4-5 is fair and I also like your point about certain players getting special treatment. has anyone ever seen Ovechkin make a hit where he doesnt leave his feet?

The one penalty that really drives me crazy though is the "pick", its a blatant interference call that St Louis, Detroit and Vancouver get away with over and over again and yet you see called against other teams

Sedin hit Keith from the front along the boards. Sedin's shoulder touched his chin but it wasn't blindside, initial contact wasn't the head, he didn't have a big head of steam. Has anybody ever been suspended for that? Can you point to a YouTube of a similar hit someone got suspended for?

The closest thing I can think of is some Pronger suspensions, but he used his forearm and elbow directly to the head closer to what Keith did (Pronger smashed them into the glass unlike Keith).

Keith was head hunting plain and simple, guys were getting suspended for that long before the headshot rule was even created. Five games is longer than he would have gotten in previous seasons but not out of line with this year's suspensions.

- noffsin6

what hit were you watching? initial contact was directly on keith's chin

Micah, I'm glad I waited to respond instead of jumping down your thoat about your response. I am serious, I do not understand how in one breath the color analysts tell us how much better the players are as skaters and how strong they are, yet some players can drop to the ice with the slightest contact (at times). We all know why the prolific divers are, why does the league continue to put up with this. If my son was to ever play that wa I would have a serious talk with him. It is not sportsmanship at all.

BTW, I hope you are raising your toddler to be an NHL fan!

Michael Moore? He represents all that is WRONG with the world. Bush is a RINO but I'm glad he was prez on 9/11 instead of that bag of d!cks Al Gore.

Don't know why it got to this, I'm guilty of seeing something and responding.

I should get back to watching the KU / UI game. Need KU to win to keep my bracket going strong.

- blackhawk24

Aww man, don't remind me. My bracket is destroyed. How's yours looking?

Oh, guys will drop for sure. But hooking is a real thing. A stick on the arm can knock you off balance. Don't forget, they are on razor blades and often on one foot.

She's a big Canucks fan, but she's mostly into the playoffs. Doesn't have the patience for the long season.

No more political talk please. Bush and Clinton and all that is in the past and this is not the CNN chat page. Let's talk hockey.

Just not sure what else can be said about the suspensions, no games affecting the Hawks tonite, and Hawks not playing until Sunday.

No need. Cleaned up, no bans. Everybody have fun speculating on 1st round match ups or offseason moves or how bad the Leafs suck or whatever.

From Vancouver Sun:
Asked specifically if Keith had threatened Daniel before the hit, Henrik delivered a little more Swedish sarcasm: “You have to ask Keith. He’s a tough Canadian guy, so I am sure he is going to be honest.”

Hmm, makes one question which country Sedin thinks he plays in.

And then there is Raymond who falls for the sake of keeping our drinking game alive. In Vancouver whenever Raymond falls the city has to drink. No wonder we are all pissed on game nights.

5 games.... I'm fine with that. IMO Danny could've got a game and a fine, but as someone said, his injury would make any suspension moot.

This has been analyzed to sh!t. I for one am ready to move on. Hopefully, for the sake ofthe hockey universe, we see you guys in the 1st round, even if it unlikely, how freaking awesome would that be?

I agree He should have got one or two games also . I think now that he is missing time because of injury it is moot and I don't think any further action will follow .Maybe a fine.

i have a hard time understanding how A) shanny didn't even acknowledge that he knew sedin had hit keith with a head shot first even though sedin got nothing! and B) right after the keith headshot did anybody catch that little biotch burrows come in and drive his knee right into duncan keiths mid section? we all noticed it at the game! did the hawks send a tape to shanny of that incident?
C) as long as you want to talk about sedin missing time, how come shanahan had not even addressed the toews situation, which goes back to the SJ game! look at the tape, toews got that concussion from a blatent hit by joe thornton by the benches! why all the hush hush about that 1 shanny? and shame on john mcdonough & stan bowman for not squawking about the toews hit the way the canucks and their coach does every time 1 of them are wronged! and yet they have 2 of the biggest offender who wil fight NO ONE tough when it comes to the rough stuff! 3& 14! and don't tell me that either of them will ever step up to answer the bell for 1 of their mates ! especially 14!
either of them could have introduced them selves to brandon bollig any time that night but they probably chose to hide behind a kid who's been on their team all of about a dozen games!

once again boys, take away the instigator rule, alot of that shlit stops both ways!
