Personally I'd rather have Gust out there than Lilja - Phifly10
Lilja has been playing some pretty good hockey lately, though, I don't mind getting Gus some solid work in. |

new injury for lilja?
this is almost unbelievable - Don'tForgetTocchet
They wouldn't comment on it downstairs, so not sure yet if it's an injury or the flu. |

Not necessarily. The 4th/5th seed is more advantageous if you get through the first round because of how often there are upsets of at least one division winner in the first round.
Let's say Pittsburgh overtakes the Rangers and then beats the eight seed. If either Boston or Florida were to get knocked by 6/7 seed, THAT team would get the Penguins in round two and the Flyers would get either Boston/Florida (if just one wins) in round two or else be a home ice team in round two if both Boston and Florida were to lose.
The Conference Finals matchup is what is it: no matter what seed you are, you play the other last team standing in the Conference.
Barring the unlikely event the Flyers finish first, being the 4/5 likely is the more advantageous road to the Conference Finals than being the 6 --- that is, if the club can get through round one. The goal here isn't to win one round anyway.
Is it really that much better to run into the Pens/Rangers in round two (if you get that far) than round one? I don't see Washington or Buffalo beating the top seed regardless of which team it is. Might as well deal with one of them right away and, hopefully, get a better on-paper matchup for round two. - bmeltzer
Flyers will most likely be playing the Rags in the 1st round. We all know that they have owned us this season. The last game against them will be a huge game in determining team morale going into the first round IMHO. Biggest game of the year if we do indeed see the Rags in round 1. April 3rd, 7pm. Only thing going for us right now is the resurgence of Bryz, and fading of the NYR. So your saying there's a chance......... |

I'm kind of with Bill and against the consensus of the fan base when it comes to who we play in the first round. A lot of people look at our 0-5 record against the Rangers this season and our success against the Pens to say they would much rather play the Pens. I feel the opposite. The Pens are the hottest team in the league and just got Crosby back. I also think our record against the Rangers this season is a little deceiving. We have not played them since Bryz has righted the ship and turned in consistently stellar performances over the last month. If we had just gotten average goaltending against the Rangers in the 5 games this season I could see us being at least 2-2-1 against them and think we could take them in the playoff series. |

I agree. But I would rather it be subtle and prolonged then abundant and quick. Like my sex life. |

As noted yesterday, I'm doing double writing duties today, subbing for NHL.com's Adam Kimelman today in addition to my HockeyBuzz stuff.
Posted the "At the Rink" pregame blog for Flyers-Habs at NHL.com, which by necessity is written from a slightly different angle than my Flyers HB blog (more 50-50 team focus split).

Wouldn't trade it for the world. Might even be able to make a non-poverty-level full-time living at this pretty soon. In all seriousness, though, there's nothing better than doing a job you love. Have worked too many writing jobs that I didn't love -- and one I eventually came to hate -- and the modest money difference didn't make up for up it.

I hope to be so lucky one day. I have to do what I do to take of my wife and son. However, I hope to be better off in 5 years, as difficult as it maybe now. |

I'm sick of this "playoff matchups" poop.
The way I see it- I put ZERO stock in the seed numbers. The playoffs (as we all know) are a completely different animal- all regular season stats can be thrown out. It's clutch time. With the emotion and adrenaline flowing, anything can happen.
More importantly though- it doesn't matter what seed you are because you're going to have to beat the best teams to win the Cup. It goes without saying that the Cup is the ultimate goal here. That being said, we're going to have to eventually beat the Devils or Penguins or Rangers or even another "best" team that suddenly catches fire.
Enough with the matchups. If this team plays for 60 minutes, matchups will be a moot point, because the Flyers will march uncontested to the finals.
Matchups shmatchups. Just win and it won't matter.
