But he's on this one, top 5 for dmen of I'm not mistaken
http://sports.yahoo.com/n...n-the-nhl?urn=nhl,wp13837 - funmaster18
Ohh very mis-leading... they say "valuable" as in bang for your buck.... and that is my point exactly.. If his bucks go up, and his bang doesnt... he isnt as valuable... Thanks...
Again, most of us are under the agreement that 5.5 and up is too much to spend for a player like Carle... Maybe if he was an elite player at 1 thing in his game like an awsome shot, or devistating hits then maybe you go higher, but he is IMO an overall very solid 2 way defenseman. Nothing special, but nothing to complain about... |

stop it. MJL is in no way close to overvaluing Carle. If you are going to interject your genius analysis, at least stop trying to do your best Seravelli impression and get your facts straight.

One can make the case he's overvaluing Carle, that's fine with me. We're all entitled to an opinion. The guy's not calling him god, though, that's just being silly. Might as well say our Delawarean friend is saying Carle's the worst hockey player ever. |

And what we are saying is that 5-5.5 million is right in line with what a player like Carle should and will get.
All the players you are comparing him to would get 7 and above.
And we ARE talking Cap hits.

I think it's fair saying 5.5 and up may be too much, but I think you're also undervaluing him at the same time. Either way, I don't care as it is your opinion. I'll just wait and see what they do in the offseason, after the playoffs. |

And I dont think I'm under-valuing him, so I'm not sure where the disconect is if MJL isn't over-valueing him... I dont remember how many times I said he is near the top of the 2nd tier D-man... That he is good offensively, not great... Has few flaws in his game... He is a sound D-man, but I wouldnt pay more then 5 millionish for him... May I go to 5.5 sure... maybe depending on the structure of the contract... But I will never agree that Carle is a Threat from the point... EVER. |

I'm sorry, I just dont think Carle does enough to make him paid as a number 1 d-man. Yes he is a decent puck mover, but he is no Timonen or Suter. He isn't an offensive threat like Buff, Weber, Karlsson, on and on and on... even though he puts up points... And he isn't a shut down defenseman like Pronger or Chara or Phaneuf.
Carle is a nice defenseman to have. He is a good puck mover, and not bad at the other parts of being a defenseman, but is that enough to pay someone over 5 million? Unfortunately I think with Timonen getting older and Pronger out, we dont have those big play, stand out defenseman anymore, and paying Carle 5 million is not going to help us get that. - RooNosHockey
$5mm isn't what a number one defenseman makes. Shea Weber will be making around $7.5mm. Suter will be getting $7mm or so. Carle's comparable to James Wisniewski and Jack Johnson(actually, he's better all around than Johnson) and $5mm is pretty much market value for Carle.
Paying $7mm for Suter would be worse for the Flyers than paying $5mm for Carle. |

I could deal with 5.5 million, but I would prefer less. All I am saying if he gets any more then that, way too much... And I wasn't compairing Carle to that guy, I was contrasting them... I was saying Carle is not like them, and thus if his cap hit is reaching 6 million the Flyers should laugh and run... |

I don't see how 5.5 is ok but 6 is laughable. |

Yea, I agree. 5 million. Maybe 5.5, but I dont go any higher, cause then your getting into the lower range of the top d-men in the league.... And Carle is not one of them... So if he is asking, or getting 6... good for him, as long as its not the Flyers giving it to him... |

The fact that we need an update makes me nervous, but with all the injuries lately, I'm just used to bad news. |

Gotta draw the line somewhere... 5.5 would be the limit, and that is putting the screws to the team that built Carle as a player. If Carle wants to nickle and dime the Flyers higher then 5.5 then he can go play in Florida... |

I wouldn't be happy going much higher than $5.5mm myself. That said, with the fairly weak FA class for defensemen, Carle could easily get an offer over that.
The problem isn't paying Carle, it's getting what Carle brings to the table for a reasonable amount on the cap hit. The only comparable UFA is Suter and he's likely going to get a huge raise. Is he better than Carle? Yes. Is he really that much better than Carle? I don't think so. |

GM might have to make a trade during the draft/offseason if he is going to part ways with Carle. |

I have said before, I am not the biggest Matt Carle fan. But to replace him, you need to do more than pray that Erik Gustafsson can suddenly play 20+ minutes a night. |
