He's made a lot of very questionable moves since arriving in Toronto. Tim Connolly 2 years at almost $5mm per. Trading for Phaneuf. It's stunning how many bad contracts he's given out.
I also think he sent a really bad message by NOT making a deadline move. - Jsaquella
In retrospect Connolly was a bad signing. The Phaneuf deal wasn't bad however...considering what he gave up. The contract is crap though.
His biggest mistake was the Kessel deal. Still he's a top 10 scorer in the league.
Another huge mistake was putting his goaltending into the hands of a goalie who was never really projected to be anything more than a back up but had 15 hot games at the start of his career.
The Komisarek signing....well....
Resigning MacArthur to what he did....well...

There's zero retrospect about the Connolly signing. It was a bad signing going in for a guy with his injury record. Phaneuf's contract alone makes it a bad deal. GM has to consider the cap implications as well as the personality implications when making a trade.
MacArthur wasn't horrible, he had to reward him to some extent. But looking at the biggest contracts up in the forwards group, there's a lot of guys on multi-year deals making $3mm or more and some of them are just head scratchers. |

Does Elliott have any shot at the Vezina with only 36-40 games played? Those numbers are ridiculous |

I've heard some people give weight to having Elliott and Halak share the Vezina, because they've split the work fairly evenly. |

Is that technically possible given how the voting works? It'd be well deserved if they could do it. Obviously St. Louis is good defensively, but you still have to make stops, and those guys do it. |

Phaneuf at the time of the deal was a 23 year old 30 minute D-Man who was a former Norris finalist. He gave up absolute shiit to get him. Is the contract bad...yep. But when he did the deal the overwhelming consensus around the league was that it was a steal. Can't blame him for pulling the trigger on that one.
Armstrong....bad deal.
Lombardi was a salary dump in order to pick up Franson.
Grabovski.....he would have gotten that deal on the open market and if they lose him then they are even more (frank)ed.
Has he done a great job...no.
Has it been completely awful...no. The Beachemin trade for Gardiner and Lupul. The Kaberle trade for Colborne, a first and a second (which turned into Liles). Save him to some extent. |

Can't be done....unless the recieve an even amount of votes. Very unlikely considering they would split the votes and still have to beat out Fleury, Hank and Rinne. |

Phaneuf was being traded because he poisoned the room in Calgary. Stuff like that has to be considered. When a guy with that pedigree is available for a bucket of dog crap, there's a reason.
Grabovski was a function of market value and need. He hasn't been all bad. The Liles deal and extension was solid. So was getting Colborne in the Kaberle deal.
But the Leafs still have $25mm committed to bad deals for next year, have no number one center, no number one goalie & a poorly constructed defense.I guess my issue is that Burke has done a very pedestrian job yet still seems to think he;s the smartest guy in the room. |

That's the thing, there is no splitting votes. Hank and Rinne will get love, Jon Quick will get ignored-and he's the guy I'd vote for. |

His biggest issue is he shut his mouth at times. Like saying the Leafs are a playoff team this year...or saying at the trade deadline that he could have had 4 first round picks for his player. Or saying he was going hard after Tavares....or the Sedins.
Burke is pretty bright but he doesn't do himself any favors with his mouth. |
