First - I'm not a BB apologist.... but even a casual fan would have to recognize that what JFJ inherited compares with what BB inherited are absolutely not comparable. JFJ had an elite player, albeit nearing the end of his career, but nevertheless a leader and a player who could pick the team up and carry it on his back.

1) Both JFJ and BB traded aware picks and prospects
True. However,
BB can and should be critisized for the Kessel for 1st, 1st and 2nd, no doubt.
Time will tell whether BB has drafted well, an area which JFJ did and does recieve credit for still....
BB's added Keith Aulie (since traded for Carter Ashton) and few other young players. BB added Cody Franson at the expense of Lombardi's contract.
BB's legacy with the Leafs, if it ends before 2014 when his contract expires will be flavored mostly by his poor and ill-advised FA acquistions which have handcuffed the roster of the team when combined with a coach like Wilson, who seemed to like black-ball players, usually young ones.
BB signs Komisarek
BB signs Beauchemin
BB trade Toskala, Blake for Giguerre
BB trades Stajan, White, Mayers and Hagman for Phaneuf, Aulie, Sjostrom
BB signs Connolly
BB trades Lebda for Franson, Lombardi

JFJ trades a 1st, 2nd and two prospects for rental Brian Leetch.
JFJ trades a 4th for "rental" Ron Francis
JFJ signs 39 year old Belfor for 3 years - prior to Belfor having back surgery???
JFJ signs Jason Allison, who is slow and has back problems.
JFJ trades a 4t for Jeff ONeil.
JFJ signs injury riddled Lindros.
JFJ signs Kaberle for 5 years; then later signs McCabe for 5 years.
JFJ signs Kubina and Hal Gil.
JFJ signs Jason Blake
JFJ traded Rask for Raycroft.
JFJ traded 1st, 2nd and 4th for Toskala and Bell.
JFJ trades Brendan Bell and a 2nd pick for "rental" Yanic Perreault.
JFJ made moves that he felt would be enough to get his team in the playoffs - giving up just about all the youth the organization had.

Now even as a casual observer, who might not be "passionate" about the hockey team... how can you compare the activities?

I'm not sure I know JFJ's teams made it at least once. I always said that JFJ gets called an idiot by the same people who have praised Burke's work in Toronto, not realizing that JFJ had better results.

One could say that JFJ's work screwed the Burke years too, but Burke's era has certainly been bad.
