Depends what a little less money is.
Say Suter signs with Detroit for $7.2mm. Carle's price tag would go through the roof. I could easily see somebody offer him a $6mm a year deal for 5 years.
Also, most good players excluding Carter will think that he can help make a Columbus or an Edmonton a good team. - Jsaquella

I'm willing to bet after making the move Poile did, Suter is staying in Nash. Especially if they beat Detroit in the first round. - RooNosHockey
If they open their wallet he will stay. Money talks. |

It wouldn't amaze me. But regardless, when Suter's off the market, Carle becomes an attractive target. The key becomes, do you overpay Carle a bit, or do you overpay somebody who won;t cost as much, but also isn't as good, or do you trade a lot of assets for a guy who can do what Carle does, and face his potential cap hit?
You have to have a backup plan. You don't want to end up being the team that trades Neal and Niskanen for Goligoski because you didn't want to bend a little bit to keep a guy that already fits your system and dressing room well |

Agree to disagree. But IMO if Pronger was healthy Carle would be the 3rd best puck mover on the team... - RooNosHockey
Well since Carle is clearly the best on the team currently, Pronger must be a hell of a breakout passer to knock Carle down 2 notches. I know he's a HOF player and all. |

Agreed. Thats my thoughts as well. I just dont want the Flyers to get into a bidding war for his services. - stveshdy
Nor do I, which is why you keep all your options open.
But I'd rather overpay Carle a bit than have to trade a lot of assets to replace him. |

Money wasnt the issue with him staying in Nashville.... Well it was, but it was more about Nash spending the money to bring in difference makers to win now. |

When that superstar does something that is an embarrassment to the league, it should matter. - Jsaquella
like punching an opponent in the grundle while he's being held face down by his teammate, for example? |

Yes I was exagerating, my point was Pronger is a much better puck mover then Carle, even though Carle is good... Does eveyone forget how Pronger slowed the game down when he got the puck, and how he always had the perfect pass to start the rush, and he was the man on the PP....
I'm about to cry. - RooNosHockey
you left out how he would shoot the puck on goal from the other end of the ice, one of my favorite Prongerisms |

I said it in yesterday's blog.
If I was a player agent, and my player was called in for a discipline hearing, I'm taking a video of that and showing it to Shanahan and asking, if THAT gets nothing but a fine of $2500, you can't possibly suspend my guy.
Bitz got two games for his hit. Weber should have gotten the same - Jsaquella
Agreed. I can't believe no suspension. It was at a slow speed and retaliatory. What is this the WWF? If it hadn't been a star player (or god forbid a player with a bad rep), would it have been a ban? YES.
Also, the apology for the blown call??....I just got some popcorn and put up the arm chair. This should be entertaining.
*Waits for the Campbell apologies to start streaming in. |

I'm sure Homer has other options in place. I dont assume they would have to trade a lot of assests to replace him. Crazier things happen. |

I'm pretty sure if they paid him enough he'd stay. His next deal will be what he makes his career off of. Money is probably the number 1 priority just slightly above wanting a cup. Sure if a team is close in money but a better opportunity to win hell probably take it, but if Nashville offers enough, he'll stay. |

I dont want to overpay for anyone. I would rather let Homer make his magic and pick up players like Carle and Meszaros for a pick, and watch them turn to gold... While you laugh at the team that gave them up, and laugh harder at the team that's spending 6 million a year for Matt Carle. |

I think it would be a mistake for any team to sign Carle and expect him to be a lead defenseman. He's a quality compliment as a #2. And adds that puck moving offensive element, as well as being solid defensively. 5.5M would be my limit and would be hesitiant at that number. I prefer closer to 5M. |

And they haven't exactly done that yet. It took a 1st to land Goose. It no doubt makes them better right now but that's not really the same as going out and getting a top UFA. |

So you think Suter wont ask for 6.5-7M per year? He wants to get paid as well. |

Bill, I heard Jagr say that next season its not about the money, and he would take a cut if the team needed him too... - RooNosHockey
I've only heard him say that he wants to play another year, is happy he signed here and has really enjoyed it but that he has no idea where he'll be next season and that there are factors beyond his control (presumably his projected role and salary cap space) that have to be discussed after the season.

Carle was obtained for Downie and Eminger and a 4th. With the Flyers getting a 3rd. And D men like Meszaros aren't traded very often for the price the Flyers paid. |
