Rather have Neal than Dupres... Crosby over Malkin... maybe we can toss in Raymond and Ballard and get Stall and Letang while we're at it - DariusKnight
The salary cap would be the only hindrance, otherwise, it's done. |

Careful. An Oiler or Leaf fan will turn that into "Canucks fans expect Johansen and the 2nd overall, or Malkin and Despres . . ." - Fosco
People have been talking about Connolly and Detroit's 1st (or maybe Tampa's 2nd). I don't think that's out of the question. Maybe something like Jack Johnson, a 2nd and something else (maybe a prosepct of a 3rd) from Columbus. I think those are very reasonable expectations and I'd be upset if Gillis couldn't get at least that. But I wouldn't be surprised it he could get more. |

He has some leverage, Luongo doesn't HAVE to be traded at this point, he CAN trade Schneider (it's just not what would be prefered) and get a much better return straight up. But again, I think Luongo would be packaged to a team that doesn't need him, but has the assets to acquire him and then traded to a team that DOES need him and can take back salary/less of a return. |

Wow, that went downhill in a hurry.
I think Lu will fetch a decent prospect and a pick or a top-6 forward and a middling prospect.
The thing is, Lu's cap hit is not that high. If guys like Hemsky are making $5m, Lu looks like a bargain. Grabovski just signed for $5.5m to be a 2nd line centre. Hell, Renne is up for a cap hit of $7m next season and I don't think you'll find anyone arguing that Renne is 25% better than Lu.
The market will exist for Lu because he's a very good player and teams need good goaltending. It won't be a huge steal for Vancouver, but Lu will command some reasonable assets and a GM will be happy to pay for him. If there is even 2 teams interested, how do you let the other team win him without offering something realistic? Vancouver might not have a lot of leverage in the situation but there are GMs out there who need to make the playoffs and a goalie like Lu will save their jobs. You pay what you have to to get a top goalie when he becomes available. - micah555
This is proabably one of the best posts on the subject. And I'm not just saying that becasue you are a ref. |

??
The jackets couldnt/didnt trade him cause other teams wouldnt pay the price howson asked. Hence, His value was lower in there eyes ( opposing gm's) than the home teams.
Not sure this was a good reference for your rebuttal. - hugefemale dog77
They could have traded if they wanted to .It had nothing to do with salary.CB will get their best value at the draft when 30 teams are involved. You need to give your head a shake.
You come in here ripping Canucks and Luongo and yet not once Bryzgalov .He is two years younger ,a complete nut job, not even close to Lus skills and was offered 5.666 per for the next 8 years compared to 5.3 for the next 6 years for Lu. |

But, but... Bryz is better than Luongo because he was so great in Phoenix! It's not like he totally benefited from playing in a system that keeps prime scoring chances down while the Canucks play more wide-open and thereby allowing more scoring chances to get through! |

I would love if the Canucks could get Connolly. Tampa will have to get rid of some salary to take on Lou's contract, whether by shipping it to another team, or back to the Canucks. Lots of (non-Canuck) fans have said Vinny for Lou, but I just can't see Gillis taking back an even worse contract.
If the Canucks have to take back one of Tampa's contracts, I would rather it be Malone, as I think he could contribute and it's a shorter contract with less $$, but I could see Connolly as the main piece. I have a hard time thinking Tampa would throw a 1st rounder onto that, but maybe a 2nd or 3rd.
Seeing the type of grief Edler gets from the Canuck fanbase, I would hate to see the reaction to Jack Johnson. |

Vinny will be playing in MTL with Gomez on his other side being coached by AV and Rome on the back end. Mtl was getting a little jealous of all the free pub TO was getting so they are trying to be more like the Leafs. |

Vinny's contract is FAR worse, and TB needs a goalie badly. With an elite goalie they are a top 5 team in the east.
Malone is also a bad contract, and is less valuable to TB than an elite goalie. Lou for Malone solves TB's contract issue, Connolly makes the deal worth it for the Canucks, maybe some other minor pieces on either side. |

Ian,
Gillis has zero leverage with Luongo. Any GM who gives "equal player value" is a fool and should be fired. The best Gillis can probably do is unload the contract.
Case in point, Brian Campbell got the Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz. I think both parties got a 'good' deal— the Hawks lost the contract and cap hell and Florida got their number 1 defenseman, such as he is. There could be a sucker out there who will chump up for Luongo, but lacking a legitimate market for his services, meaning demand from mutiple teams to deal for him, any GM who does so is an abject fool.
And I don't think such a market exists.
Chicago would never deal Seabrook, or even say Niklas Hjalmarsson, for him (with that contract). Just won't happen.
Good goalie? Sure. Better actually than what he has been made out to be. But he also comes with much baggage and uncertainty.
Any team that deals for him has to consider the possibility that he will not 'work out"with them within a couple of years and then they have an albatross deal on their hands.
Vancouver has a lot of other tradeable assets. Unfortunately, Lu is not at this point one that should net much return. - John Jaeckel
Like usual, I agree with you. NO WAY WHATSOEVER Vancouver gets equal value for Bobby Lou. I could possibly see Montreal acquire Luongo for Scott Gomez? Then trade Price to the Hawks for Sharp or Kane. Vancouver will have to take on another absurd contract if they want Luongo out. Gilles should be fired just for signing Luongo to that ridiculous contract. |

How's that Hemsky contract working out for you? Hmm? Or better yet, how about Horcoff? Let's not bring up the 2.4 mil and the 1.2 mil you still have on the books for Souray. For what Luongo does, he is not overpaid, nor is his contract structured in such a way that it hampers teams. It is a cap circumvention contract designed so that by the time the majority of the salary is paid, his best years are behind him and he can retire gracefully and not have the contract count against the cap. This has been explained many many times. |

It would be nice if one of these two could move to the left side (I think Jensen may have played a bit on the LW while in Oshawa). Two wingers with size and skill on the same line would make life hell for opposing D. - Fosco
Ya you have the speed, puck handling and distribution of Schroeder mixed with the physicality and playmaking ability of Kassian and the skill, size and speed of Jensen. That'd kind of mask Schroeder's size disadvantage. |

Do you seriously think Gilles wouldn't accept a Gomez for Luongo deal? If I'm Gilles, I make that trade and buy out Gomez. He only has two years remaining.
Ian's possible trades are as unrealistic as they get. |
