Still hard to fathom. Directly & indirectly that trade got rid of Gomez for the Rangers, allowed them the $ to sign Gaborik, trade Higgins for Brandon Prust who is massively underrated & of course McD. Sorry brother, had those type of trades go against us too many times. |

Anyone seen Terry Richardson's video of Kate Upton doing the "Cat Daddy"?!
I'd post it, but a ban would follow. |

Pierre Maguire, who was the bridesmaid for the third time in GM pursuits, was on the radio this morning and discussed it. He was very supportive of the hire, of the process, and wished Bergevin the best of luck. He also said that this was a job he really wanted. Being a guy who grew up in Montreal, watched the rise and the eventual fall of the organization and spoke of how they needed to get back to where they were in the past.
People can scoff at the idea that being the Habs GM is the most coveted job in the NHL, but there are a lot of people who would agree with that assessment and Maguire said it as much this morning. While the team is down for the count now, their history is second to no one in the NHL. People can argue it all day but for a lot of people who witnessed pure domination for 5 straight years, who witnessed rule changes based on a power play so lethal that it had to reduce the impact of the 2 minute minor, it clearly is.
In the newer era of the NHL, the Canadiens have won 13 cups since 1960. No team even has half of that.
So, if you don't care about history at all, then sure, it isn't a coveted position but most hockey purists realize the importance of this franchise and even people like me who hate the Canadiens respect that history and respect the people who grew up idolizing that team. - Lohaus
I agree with the History and nobody is as wealthy with it as the Habs. But I'm sorry, the habs have done a lot to alienate non French speaking talent and therefore this would not be considered the most coveted job in hockey. I think there's a prestige with managing any original 6 market but also comes with a burden that many GM's would care to work without. |

Well, I said a lot of people would consider it the most coveted job. And part of the reason is the fact that the team has gone in the direction it has gone. The fans of this team are there, the part that makes it such an exciting position is that if you can be the guy to get it back to where it probably should be, you'd be a part of a legend. If you fail, you'll probably have that around your neck as well. It wouldn't be a coveted position if there wasn't somewhat of a risk. |

I can agree with that point...This was said when Burke came in that if he can somehow make things work, he'd be a god in Toronto or the goat. Regardless this was a good start for the Habs, I just felt the "coveted" comment needed to be spoken to cause Leafs bloggers, writers or fans or from any other team made the same statement, Habs fans would be the first object. 7 Years have given Leaf Fans a complex and made us defensive...lol |

And honestly, I think being a Leaf fan you would agree that the same argument could actually be made that the Leaf GM spot would also be in the conversation of the most coveted job. My initial point wasn't to say that the Montreal position is defintively the most coveted position because it isn't an argument you will ever win as it is more of an opinion and not a fact, just to say that there are a large number of people like Maguire who would believe this to be based on points a, b, c and etc... and like I said, the same could be said of the Leaf position. I only posted because based on some of the reactions, there seemed to be a scoff when really, it wasn't really a far fetched statement. |

You're right, it is more opinion then anything. My opinion is Montreal has made more hurdles for talent that does not speak French and that would make it less desireable for someone who doesn't speak French to want to even go after the job. This is a good hiring though, I'd like to see some Leafs/Habs playoff series that we thought we'd get when we were moved to the same division. |

There are clearly hurdles and just with the treatment Cunneyworth has recieved shows it can pop up at any time... but on the other hand, I get the feeling if the team was winning, those issues would fade, if nothing else a wee bit. I think the team needs to have some French Canadian flavor, don't get me wrong, some players the fans in Montreal can cling to and cheer for, but I think ultimately they want to get back into winning on a consistent basis with an obvious plan. Bergevin could be that guy, he has the credentials to at least get a shot to try. Time will tell. This job may end up wearing him down, like I find it is with Burke. I'm not a guy who would want that postition so good luck to him. |

Yeah, I watched and remember all that history unfold and as great as some of those teams were in the late '70s and in the 6 team era I also remember how it was done - getting to protect the 2 best junior players in Quebec every year and Sam Pollock ripping off the idiot management and ownership of the California Golden Seals and the LA Kings every year for their top draft picks or players they wanted.
Unfortunately for those who revel in their history, Les Habs are in the NHL toilet bowl right now and its going to be tough climbing out. Better hope that Bergevin has a few better ideas that the resident American genius who runs the other storied NHL franchise down the 401. - RickJ

In hindsight, i'd rather they never drafted him. |

Correct. Those were the two. So in theory, that guy and all the other whiners are correct - they did have the ability. But that ability amounted to absolute poop and had nothing to do with their success. |
