No one saying there wont be, they're saying that it's not an advantage. - burn
It's NOT an advantage that ALL Russians and Europeans for that matter, grew up playing on international sized ice, so much so that it's second nature to them?
It's NOT an advantage that the Russians will have home ice/fans advantage?
It's NOT an advantage that both the Russians and Europeans have had years, of experience playing the different style of game that the international sized ice demands?
It's NOT an advantage that a good number of Russians and Finns, who will end up on their respective Olympic teams, will have 2 weeks to prepare, practise and become familiar with the Arena(s) prior to the start of the games?
It's NOT an advantage that these same players will NOT have to deal with the time zone issues?
And conversely, you must think that when both North American team players depart from their respective NHL clubs will, in some cases, travel across 8 to 12 time zones in a couple of days, arrive in Sohci and perhaps get together, as a team, to practise once before their first real game, is somehow not going to matter and is somehow in your mind an advantage???
If you or anyone really think there is NO advantage for the Russians or Finns over the North American teams, then why has Canada not Medaled when the games have NOT been in North America since 1994, if these issues I've listed don't matter in your opinion???
How do you account for Canada's failure to win a medal, if on paper they are the better team?? If not the travel, timezone adjustments, lack of practise as a team, ice size and the lack of familiarity with it vs the Russians and Europeans..................then what is it???
YOU must know the reasons. |

You're insistence that the larger ice surface is an advantage is astonishing. The Canadians won in international ice in Salt Lake. |

It's not an advantage because it's not happening. The players in question will be playing in league and they will be getting off just like the NHL. they will have no more time together than anyone else....... oh and no one get into the arenas any sooner than anyone else.

You've listed a lot of points...... most of which have been out right proven to be false (the large ice surface advantage/disadvantage) or outright made up (Euros getting out early and into arenas early), but 2 points you've made are correct. Home Ice and times zones, of which no one in this thread has disagreed with.
You're stubbornness knows no bounds. |

The KHL is Shutting down on January 30th, well before the Olympics, not like the NHL that is shutting on the Feb 9th. The first games are scheduled for Feb 12th, giving players from the NHL very little time, after travelling between 8 to 12 time zones, to practise in Sochi before their first game(s).

Most of those KHL players are going to need that extra time too considering how much less skill they have compared to the guys coming over from the NHL. Gotta make up for that somehow! |

Almost half the skaters for the Russian team, cam from the KHL at the last Olympics, and it should be pretty much the same this time around.
With January 30th (KHL Shutdown) coming well before their first game scheduled for Feb 13th, I think that gets them into Sochi and out the ice practising as a team well before the Canadians who will be lucky to get one practise after they arrive after the NHL shuts down three or four days before their first game.
none of this is made up..............there's this thing called "google" that anyone can use to look up these facts, including the flying times between Montreal and Moscow, and then Moscow to Sochi.

Don't be foolish. There are a number of Russians, who choose to play in the KHL, who have, or could still play in the NHL, that will be on their Olympic team.
Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Perezhogin and Alexander Radulov just of the top of my head.

When I'm done then the 5th grader can explain how it's irrelevant.
Who cares how many Khl'ers are on the team. |

No i didn't.
Eating crow.
I've told you that everyone in this thread has acknowledged the advantage of home as well as the time zone. Although all the best (save for kovi) will be in the NHL and have to deal with the same time zone issues.
You keep harping on the ice as an advantage when it's been proven with cold hard facts not to make a difference.
Time zone and home ice are(may be) an advantage, all the rest is just noise. |

I wonder whether Canada will hit its stride by the time the medal round comes around.
It seems to me like so long as Canada doesn't crash out of the tournament in the round robin, then the later arrival date for Canada is a moot point. |
