Getting a little excited to see this team on the ice and playing.

I'm also strongly in favour of a World Cup of Hockey if the NHL won't be going to Korea(seems pretty unlikely that they will).

- Nucker101

The world cup of hockey allows teams to prepare during the summer, have a good number of practises before the tournament starts.

This Olympic tournament does not allow for teams to prepare or practise properly, and arrive a couple of days before their first game after travelling between 9 and 14 time zones. It is not a great representation of a countries team, as would be with the world cup of hockey format.

Each team that has a legitimate shot at the Gold, has a couple of easy games before they meet some real competition, this in essence are warm up games..................but if you lose one of them, it could mean trouble down the road in term of seeding.

With the World Cup of hockey, teams would be able to have exhibition games to warm up, before the tournament even starts, making for a much better tournament.

Flyers owner, Ed Snider agrees with the opinion that it's stupid to shutdown the NHL to accommodate the Olympics, with zero benefits for the NHL.

If I had my way, we'd never go to the Olympics. We're the only league that breaks up our season. Basketball plays in the winter, but they play Olympics in the summer. It's ridiculous. The whole thing's ridiculous.

Is that only when it's on the other side of the world, or any time?

I don't care if it was in Philadelphia, I wouldn't want to break up the league. I think it's ridiculous to take three weeks off or however long it is in the middle of the season. It screws up everything.

Would you like to see a return to the World Cup format?

I'd like to see anything other than the Olympics. I mean, I hate ‘em.

Do you think most of the league agrees with you at this point?

I don't know. I haven't taken a poll, but how can anybody be happy breaking up your season? No other league does it. Why should we?

Originally you did it because you thought there'd be a benefit on the back end, but you haven't seen that at all?

There's no benefit to us whatsoever. If anything, I can only see negatives. The players want to play. The Players' Association has a lot to say about it. As an owner, I think it's ridiculous.

Was this a point of contention [during the work stoppage]?

No. There was no point of contention. The players wanted to play and the league agreed. But as an owner, I personally don't like it. It's not good for our fans, it's not good for our league, it changes the momentum... everything about it is wrong.

Crazy old man.

i hate NHL players going to the Olympics!! Why isnt my player going to the olympics!!!!

Didnt his team go to the finals in the 2010 Olympic year.
seems like his team might be in a position to upset one of those teams again

I am sure the Owners use is as a bargaining chip for something they want against the union. Probably why he is chirping so much..wants to use it in negotiations

Team Canada is holding it's first on ice practice this afternoon (EDT), first game Thursday at noon (EDT).

If my memory serves me correctly, they'll be using a 3 point system like they did in 2010, in the preliminary round. Three points for a win in regulation time, one point each if tied (at end of regulation) and one additional point for a win in OT or SO.

If teams are tied in point after the preliminary round, I think the tie breaking is done by "head to head" results between the tied teams, and then if necessary, goal differential between teams "head to head", and then I think they go, if necessary to total goals scored. After that, I don't remember.

So should team "run up" the score against the weaker links within their groups, in case the tie breaker goes to "total goals scored"??? I think the logical answer is yes, as it just may affect the a teams ranking at the end of group play, and who you may face in the next round.

So, does Canada score more than 10 goals in each of it's first two games?

(BTW if anyone else knows the exact tie breaking rules, please feel free to correct me)

eff the haters, I love this sh1t.

all the elite players of the world playing for national pride.

that Sweden/Czech game was good stuff.

even with the loss of h sedin, I still maintain there the second best team in this tourney.

OEL and karlsson were dominant today. wont find a better pairing than that. and that includes any combination keith and weber/doughty or suter and mcdonagh

I think USA is being underrated. Russia will be dangerous if they have a good PP. I have Canada, USA and then one of Sweden/Russia(whoever gets better goaltending) as the 3 medallists. Kind of a cap shoot to exactly predict who wins, but I'll say Canada vs Russia for Gold with the Americans beating Sweden for the Bronze.

oh for sure.

and amidst all the hate from some of the canadian fans when 'murica announced, I've been impressed with usa's roster from the start. how can anyone shrug off a team with ryan suter, kessel, parise, kane, mcdonagh, backes etc. probably the second best depth too. so good

I wouldn't be surprised if any of the big 4 win. hell I wouldn't even be that shocked if finland won.
the swiss, Czechs and Slovaks are no pushovers either!!

ill agree to disagree as I got Sweden at 2 and usa at 3 with Russia a step behind all of em cause their depth at all positions is fairly suspect. but it's all just conjecture. im worried about all of em

It usually boils down to goal-tending and defence when this tournament is played on International sized ice.

Canada probably has the most talent, and the most depth, of the teams over in Sochi, but with the Europeans life long familiarity with how the game is played on International sized ice evens the playing field to a certain extent.

I'm cheering for Canada, but as you, will not be surprised with a less than Gold medal performance in a tournament set up such as this.

Tuned in this morning to watch the third period of the USA vs Slovakia game, and after 10 minutes got bored and switched over to the omens speed skating. With the score already 7 to 1, I guess the teams were just playing out the period, and probably not representative of the first two periods.

Could not find the Russia vs Slovenia game anywhere on the multiple stations added to the BellTV line up to bring us more coverage?????

Adding on to what you said, I think Canada would win a 7-game series against any other national team, and I think two Canadian teams would be in the top 5 in the world before two of any other nation.

That, to me, is one way of demonstrating cultural supremacy in a sport, but there's of course drama inherent in the notion that we need to prove it on a certain day, with a certain subset of our best players.

To borrow a football phrase, "any given sunday..."

I dunno about live, but Eastlink (NS provider with a little bit of reach elsewhere) is keeping all the olympic events OnDemand (after the fact).

It's nice for the majority of people who are stuck at work while the events are taking place.

As I've pointed out before, Canadians dominate the total make up of the players in the NHL. That to me indicates which country produces the best hockey players in the world.

Winning this tournament only proves which team was the best team in this one particular tournament. But, as one Russian put it in an interview I watched yesterday, winning the Olympic medal count does not mean as much as winning the Hockey Gold to Countries such as theirs and ours.

Not gonna be a "Juggernaughtian" performance today (from team Canada) as jet lag will still be a factor.
I expect a close game today vs Norway, and Canada traditionally starts this tournament slow, and with little urgency as they usually play a much weaker team and kinda take them for granted.
While the other team usually see a win, tie or close game vs Canada as a victory for their country's hockey program.

I think the last time Norway beat Canada was over 60 years ago, but Canada's first game on International sized ice in past Olympics have always been closer than would be expected..............and the 9 to 12 hour jet lag / time zone change for the Canadians, vs none for the vast majority of the Norwegians may have played a part in that game.

They showed was more speed in yesterday's game.
