Puzzling maybe, but not relevant. It's like getting a speeding ticket. Sure, everyone else is speeding too, but you're the one who got caught.
It's also the fact that the hit was born out of his frustration 10 seconds prior that makes it premeditated. It makes it seem much worse that those other hits.
Giroux should make a statement and apologize to his teammates. - FlyerGuy
I really don't need him to make a statement, I'm sure he will address his teammates and be remorseful. As a fan, I'm pretty sure he understands the gravity of his mistake. It was a heat of the moment mistake that I'm sure he wishes he could do over.

No apology necessary. Giroux has countless times put the team on his back this year, time for his teammates to pick him up. - PLindbergh31
It is neccessary. Giroux put himself before the team there. The latter point I agree with wholeheartedly. |

we should just suck it up and take our lumps, imo - Crimsoninja

I don't have a problem with the suspension. When you look around the playoffs there have been worse shots or players leaving skates that are not being held to the same standard. - stveshdy
yeah, but in this case it was the whole play. After complaining to the ref he charged up the ice to make a big hit to take out his frustrations.
There may have been technically worse hits this year that went unsuspended, but his had a whole predatory feel to it after the non-call on Brodeur. |

Why does he go on and on about what happened the past 60 seconds as if it proves intent? Clearly, it establishes that Giroux is mad and perhaps wants revenge. No one disputes interference/roughing.
But how does it establish Giroux is mad and is specifically targeting head? If Giroux had been laughing for the past 60 secs and thrown that exact same hit, would that have meant a lesser fine? - PT21
The action speaks for itself. The head was the primary point of contact. I haven't watched the Shanny explanation vid clip yet, but you're correct in saying that what led up to the hit is really a moot point. |

No idea, but it really doesn't matter. The players who are regulars will get extended minutes. |

No different than Neal. He was complaining about a hit he took to the knee. He than ran Couturier without the puck and then headhunted Giroux with the intent to injure (with a previous history) and got 1 game. Makes no sense at all. |

Exactly. It sucks for flyers fans that it happened, but letting this hit go unpunished would just set the league back further. - rmdevil313

That's the thing though. I don't mind if Giroux is the precedent. Do you really think that all of these hits will be called down the line into next season? Not likely. The Grioux suspension, for lack of better words, was random. There's nothing about his hit that set him apart from Neal/Malkin/Weber/Ovechkin/etc. Nothing at all. If anything, the first-time offender status should have worked in his favor.
Instead, it truly does look like Shanahan spun his wheel of suspensions and it landed on 1 game. I don't wanna hear this sh*t about him having a hard job and everything isn't black or white. Of course it isn't. But when fans of all teams can come to one conclusion and Shanahan often reaches the other conclusion, it should be brought to somebody's attention..... |

I admit hes not quite the Cup wimmer Lavi, Barber, Hitchcock, John Stevens, all have been leading the Flyers....its tough for Lindy to win the cup when you guys do every year |

Saltier wording than I would've used but I agree with the sentiment. |

I would go with Sestito. Another big body can't hurt. Flyers are being pushed off the puck like infants. |

Giroux deserved the suspension. It was a dirty play. The Flyers became the Penguins in this round. Maybe having Giroux out will force the team to work simpler and harder. I doubt it though. If I see a great effort in Game 5 thats all I want to see. |

As much as you wouldn't want it to, human nature plays a part here. The whole "grey area" argument becomes a little less grey because of Giroux's actions prior to the hit. It's easier for Shanahan (and more likely for any person) to deem it malicious because they go "yup, look he's mad". Where as with other plays its not so clear cut because it is happening "heat of the moment".
