He's also quite a bit better than what the Flyers have on hand to replace him. Want Erik Gustafsson playing 22 minutes a night next year? I don't. That means you either re-sign Carle or replace him via a trade or free agency. Either way you're going to trade significant assets or take on a sizeable cap hit. - Jsaquella
Why this Gusty hate? He is by far the best in the +/- column against NJD. Where by far I mean he is +4 and no one else is even positive. I have been very impressed by his poise and ability to be calm under pressure.
I am equally amazed at this Meszy love. What exactly is he going to do? This is not Boston who are wearing us down with their big bodies. These are people panicking under pressure.

Statistics are only of use when applied to Matt Carle in a positive manner. Any suggestion that another player's statistics in some twisted way make him seem better than Matt Carle shall be deemed inadmissible.

If he were healthy Meszy would bring the physical, have a solid shot from the point on the PP and play a solid defensive game. He isn't prone to errors. I love gusty, but he IS undersized and he IS a rookie. I like him, too, but I don't think he's auditioning for a top pairing role at the moment.

A healthy Meszaros would be a significant upgrade over Gustafsson.

not that i care one way or another. Gus v. Meszaros is not going to make a difference in this series. - wilsonecho91
You can find a game like that for any NHL defenseman. Not being prone to errors means that more times then not, he makes the right play. And your latter point is likely correct. Not if the other issues aren't fixed.

In this particular series, I am not sure about that at all.

acknowledged regarding all defenseman, but I thought Bill's point that he had a chronic problem of overcommiting to a man and taking himself out of the play was a good reminder that Mesz wasn't great earlier in the year.

Meszaros has had periods of inconsistency. But he's also had long periods of play where he has been a beast.

This is the same Meszy who had a very mediocre first 2/3 of the season, right?
I like Meszy, actually. But I don't think the big shot from the point would help. We can barely get set up on the pp.
