It's like giving a DH a suspension and letting him serve it during interleague play.

He's also quite a bit better than what the Flyers have on hand to replace him. Want Erik Gustafsson playing 22 minutes a night next year? I don't. That means you either re-sign Carle or replace him via a trade or free agency. Either way you're going to trade significant assets or take on a sizeable cap hit.

If he's not pitching 'til Sunday then that IS pushing him back. He pitched Friday and would have been scheduled to go Wednesday.

Statistics are only of use when applied to Matt Carle in a positive manner. Any suggestion that another player's statistics in some twisted way make him seem better than Matt Carle shall be deemed inadmissible.

If he were healthy Meszy would bring the physical, have a solid shot from the point on the PP and play a solid defensive game. He isn't prone to errors. I love gusty, but he IS undersized and he IS a rookie. I like him, too, but I don't think he's auditioning for a top pairing role at the moment.

If he were healthy Meszy would bring the physical, have a solid shot from the point on the PP and play a solid defensive game. He isn't prone to errors. I love gusty, but he IS undersized and he IS a rookie. I like him, too, but I don't think he's auditioning for a top pairing role at the moment.

You can find a game like that for any NHL defenseman. Not being prone to errors means that more times then not, he makes the right play. And your latter point is likely correct. Not if the other issues aren't fixed.

acknowledged regarding all defenseman, but I thought Bill's point that he had a chronic problem of overcommiting to a man and taking himself out of the play was a good reminder that Mesz wasn't great earlier in the year.

In this particular series, I am not sure about that at all.

I'm 100% positive about that. Gustafsson is a 6/7 defenseman. Meszaros is a top 4 quality experienced NHL defenseman.

Meszaros has had periods of inconsistency. But he's also had long periods of play where he has been a beast.

I like Meszy, actually. But I don't think the big shot from the point would help. We can barely get set up on the pp.
