Absolutely. Gustafsson isn't close to the player that Carle is.
- MJL

In this series, Carle has been a better player than Gusty? Never mind who has better career stats etc. I think Gusty is suffering from a bit of bias. He is undersized and a rookie, so he must be worse. I can't remember plays leading to goals where Gusty has been the clear goat. I can regarding Carle.

If he's not pitching 'til Sunday then that IS pushing him back. He pitched Friday and would have been scheduled to go Wednesday.

Based on Corsi & other advanced stats, Carle has been the team's most effective defenseman

Carle's must be much higher. I don't remember but it is obvious, since he is almost always out there after Coburn.

Yea, Carle is playing 25 minutes a game against top lines. Gustafsson is playing 15 minutes a game. You don't have to go very far back to remember a bad line change by Gustafsson leading to a goal. But that really isn't fair. Gustafsson is a rookie who has played well. And he's a decent player. But the point that Jsaq made, and I reinforced with the same point of view. Is that Gustafsson is not the player that Carle or Meszaros is. And he many never be. Gustafsson is neither a player that is physical, and a shutdown defender type. Nor is he a top puck mover and offensive contributor. He lacks physical tools. He's a decent depth defenseman. But I don't know if he'll ever be a player you want as a regular playing 20 minutes a night in the lineup.

In this series where defense has been non-existent, that's like being the tallest midget.

What's a Corsi? Is that better or worse than a goal?

I forgot about the line change. I think Schenn has some blame too on that one.

About top opposition: if he is a weak link, then NJ would send their top lines against him when he is on the ice. And his usual partner is a -4 or -5 or something. +4 is a pretty startling stat over 4 games when you are the only player in the + and the team is down 3-1.

The thing I notice about Gusty is that he is usually very savvy with his decisions. Those particular traits are very important in this series when players have played really dumb.

And about "physical tools". He is the same height as Kimmo and 14 lbs lighter. He could easily gain that in a year or two.

I think is Meszy is available, he should take Lilja's spot, not Gusty's.

This is pretty obvious and I agree with it. However, it is impossible to project exactly how Gusty will end up...I'm just saying never say never. He could (unlikely as it is) be a 20 minute guy. Saying he is better then Carle is just laughable though.

And if I were the GM I would trade Carle's rights at the draft since I don't think his true value with be his cap hit next year.

Gustafsson played a great game in game 6 vs. Pittsburgh, he hasn't been able to duplicate those efforts since, but he's a young player who is still learning. I think he can be at minimum a third pairing guy in the NHL.

The entire d-core as a whole in this series has been miserable, no one has played well.

Corsi measures several factors, mainly shots for & against. Using those numbers, Timonen has actually been slightly better than Carle. They are the only 2 Flyer defensemen with positive ratings. Gustafsson has been far & away the worst

Thats unacceptable. The team needs to play better. I don't care about scoring a lot of goals at this point. I want to see this team play better defensively. If they cant do that then it wont matter how many goals they score. The transition from defense to offense has been down right embarrassing so far.

Gustafsson is no where near as strong in the core and lower body as Timonen is. In the list of players that I would be looking to blame, Gustafsson is no where near the top of the list. He's a Rookie that has been pressed into the lineup due to injuries. And has performed well for the most part. But he has struggled as much as anybody has in this Series. There is no question in my mind that if Meszaros is available, Gustafsson should be the odd man out. New Jersey is having success on the forecheck against who ever the top line is out against. They don't have much of a need to try and gain the ideal matchups.

I'll pass. I understand he does a lot for the players in the locker room but hes not worth the cap hit imo (bc of his age).
