It does look bad but I just have a hard time believing he would take an intentional whack at someone's head at that point in the game. Regardless it was a horrible penalty and completely unnecessary. I don't know if it played any role or not in us tying the game but it sure proved to be huge in OT.
It's not even just that his stick is "up like that"
He swings it head high with pretty blunt force, this was way more brutal of a play than people who are just labeling it as unlucky or careless. It's probably a lot closer to something that Shanahan should have looked at, IMO. - jimbro83
I'm not sure what he was doing there. I would assume he is battling for position and trying to work his way out to cover a shooting lane. I guess he was trying to throw Hags off of him and the stick ot way from him so to speak.

I don't think there are words to describe what he is doing and make it sound good. It was just a dumb dumb move by a guy who isn't that type of guy.
I hear Redden will be the BIG splash Burke makes this summer!!! - Prucha
Not that I care for Redden at all, but does anyone else wish that the Rangers would just buy out his contract and free that poor bastard? I'm sure he could still play minutes in the NHL but I just feel like a terrible decision by both parties has left that guy stuck in purgatory for long enough....

if there is an amnesty clause in the new CBA that lets us buy him out without a cap hit, sure, otherwise no. Dead cap space is extremely foolish.

It's a rough situation for him, and I do feel bad how his career ended. With that said, the current CBA basically gives no choice in purging contracts. The cap hits associated with a buy-out aren't very cap friendly, and despite how horrible it is, it seems that an organization has a greater duty to the team as a whole and the fanbase to take the most cap friendly move. It sucks for Redden, it really, really does, but the rules as currently consistuted basically gave the Rangers no choice other than buying him out and having a significant cap hit on the book for the next several years.
Not to mention, he did have a choice. He could have walked away from the contract, left the $6.5 million a year on the table, and signed somewhere else for a $2 million per. I certaintly understand why he wouldn't want to leave that money on the table, but he could be playing in the NHL if he chose to walk away from the money.
Sad situation no doubt, and the word is that he has been a very good soldier down there. I respect the hell out of the guy for that.

absolutely correct, Redden could walk away from this deal and declare himself a UFA but chooses not to, no sympathy yo.

Yep, its why I said terrible decision by both parties. I mean, if 6.5 mill were on the table for half a decade, I'd be pretty sure I'd sign it as well but pretty much everyone in Ottawa knew Redden had declined heavily the two years previously and wasn't worth the coin that year, let alone 4 or 5 years down the road.
I know the Rangers wouldn't eat the cap hit, it'd be silly to do so, just pointing out how unfortunate this whole deal is for him.
On this great day, Jimbo, you can't find any sympathy at all? None? - Pete V
he has made 13 million dollars the last two years to play in the AHL.
that isn't enough money for him?
Bryan Berard loved the game so much he gave up his guaranteed money after his horrific eye injury so he could try and make a comeback.
Redden's biggest problem is that he has no passion. He isn't even mad about playing in Hartford, he hasn't complained he's been a great soldier. The boy has got no balls, that's why he failed here.

I can't argue with that. I really can't. I yield!
And just as a sidenote, if the Rangers bought him out today, it would cost them $3.2 million agains the cap for the next two years, and $1.7 million for the two years after.

As much it would be nice to buy him out and free him to go elsewhere, no way they can do with that cap hit. As pointed out in comments and something we have discussed, if amnesty clause comes in during new CBA, I could see it then. But why in gods name are we talking about Redden on a day like today after what happened last night?
