I agree, just wanted some other opinions.
In the pipe dream world, wouldn't that be awesome if we get him??
I know the whole is actual D, not defensive forwards, but still!! - Giroux_Is_God
The Flyers don't need Parise. They just need some complementary pieces. |

even you would look sweet back there with only 15 pucks a night coming your way, scoob. - OrangeBlack27
I think you are underestimating Brodeur. Did he play with some great talent? Sure did. Did he have a great system in front of him? Sure did. Even when that system broke down he was incredible. I can't say that he is overrated because he's one of the best goalies to ever play the game. |

Is Parise defensively sound?? What say the general public?
Just curious, is all. - Giroux_Is_God

I think some of these folks suffer from "he doesn't wear my team's colors so I don't acknowledge his greatness" -itis.

Exactly.
Bigger question: who is going to be able to afford him?

It's your opinion, enjoy it. The numbers he's put up warrant top-3 discussion.
But to think he's up there with Hasek and Roy as the best goaltender to ever play (in terms of pure talent) is laughable, imo. |

Hasek is the best IMO (but I also may have slight homer glasses on), but I will say hes not nearly as accomplished as Brodeur. |

Classic debate. Brodeur has certainly had one of the best careers of any goalie, and while some of that is owed to the Devils system, you could say the same of Brady in NE.
I think he is also ine if the more talented goalies to play in my era, my #1 biased choice being Hasek there. But Hasek I wouldn't say was a better goalie than Brodeur, just more talented... If that makes any sense. |

I just want to throw this out there.
For all of those wanting to change the system and possibly coaching.
Lava isn't going to go into a defensive first scheme all the sudden, and imo nor should he.
You play to your strengths and that is the offense of this team. It will take years to change out the players and bring in more defensive minded guys. To play a defensive system you need first and foremost a group of D-men who are consistent in their zone.
As it stands right now Carle, Mez and Coburn do not do it consistently enough. Kimmo is up there in age, and its showing big time.
As the forwards go, and Bill has mentioned this in the past, they are a group that isn't great in terms of defensive zone play. That includes guys like Giroux, Hartnell, JVR, Briere, Simmonds, and Schenn to a degree. Interestingly enough that basically makes up most the offensive core of the Flyers as well.
Players can learn to be better on D, we have seen it with Kovalchuk. At the same time we have also seen that sometimes you have it (Coots), and sometimes you just dont.
In regards to goaltending you need first and foremost a goalie who will make the easy saves. When you play defense first often you try and keep the other team to the outside, and limit their chances to low percentage shots. Bryzgalov cannot be letting those in, and as of right now I do not have 100% faith in him doing so. I understand defensive play and goaltending go hand in hand but it's damn risky, and I will admit it, do not have such great faith in Ilya as some.
In the end imo the Flyers are playing a good system. They obviously need work on the defensive end of the puck. However I believe in Lava's system.
I think for the Flyers to be a better team next year they need to do is:
Let Carle and Jagr go. Use the money to go after Suter. With Bryzgalov on the team I would be in favor of dealing Bobrovsky. At the deadline I would be making a deal with the Wild that sends out JVR for picks and Cal Clutterbuck. As well to sign Sammy Pahlsson as a cheap UFA.
The team would then look like this:
Hartnell-Giroux-Schenn
Clutterbuck-Briere-Voracek
Pahlsson-Cooties-Talbot
Wellwood-Read-Simmonds
Kimmo-Suter
Grossman-Coburn

That's good in a way. The team deserved both. Boos for the fact that they really didn't show up in the second round, and cheers for the rookies that made great strides this year. - Hextall271
And I'm not sure how much of the booing was for the Flyers and how much was for the Devils.

To me, it boils down to save % vs. league average the same year.
Hasek and Roy put up "better" numbers vs. their competition most years compared to Brodeur, and they didn't have the benefit of the Devils system. |

Put Hasek or Roy behind Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko and Rafalski and tell me how many cups they win!
