If Carle comes back for what you say, 5mil, what would be your next priority? - ggunky
I agree with Bill. It would be nice to have a defenseman with a good shot from the point. And also a gritty two way Winger that's good in puck battles. There is also some room for maneuvering to get more Cap space. And there's also the factor of if there's going to be a Bonus Cushion. So there's a lot of things still unknown. It's also based on Holmgren saying he thinks the Cap is going to be 69M.

I agree.
Kimmo comes off the books next year so the Flyers could roll his salary into what Weber will cost.
Yes, I do understand that Weber will command more then Kimmo is paid.
My point is to say, the Flyers will only need to find a Million + to sign him versus the full 7m + - ggunky
And Weber is one player that I would have no qualms about signing to a front loaded, longer term deal with low years on the back end, to lower the Cap hit. But that's so far away.

I dont know that I retain Carle for 5 million.
According to Bill, he is looking to possibly sign for below market value if it means staying in Philly.
I am not against bringing back a healthy Kubina to round out the bottom pairing, subbing Gus and Lilja in and out as needed.
I'm quite interested in adding Travis Moen on a reasonable deal. |

That and the cap might even go up, who knows. Basically I don't want to go balls to walls after Suter. Players become available every season, whether someone peed in their cheerios or they just want to go to a contender. I see people hem and haw about how they'd rather have Suter at 7 mil than Carle at 5. Well all I'm gonna say is that extra 2 mill can get you another player and quite frankly Suter has been on a team that has his partner and a topnotch goalie yet they can't get out of the 2nd round, so it's not like he automatically makes the team better. Last year was a year to be bold this year, I'd prefer frugality.
Edit: furthermore like MJL and I think a few others mentioned, NJ just mopped the ice with the Flyers and there isn't some Weberesqe d-man over there either. |

What is under market value? If they can get Carle for less then 5M, that's great. But I would definitely do 5M for Carle. Right now, I would move on from Kubina. It would help to know what his heath status is.
Moen is a good choice. |

I thought the cap hit is just the salary divided by the years. I know the bonus stuff factors in but I just let cap geek figure that out for me

It is. Weber wouldn't have any bonuses in his contract, if the Flyers signed him as a UFA.

On this team, as on most playoff teams, Carle is a 2nd pair dman. Coburn, Grossmann and Mesz all ahead on depth chart.
Not a shutdown type, maybe on 2nd unit pp. Steady jack of all who eats lots of minutes, for lack of a better description.
No way in hell worth 5 mil.
If Holmgren is going to be stupid and flash 5, spend the extra 2 and go for Suter and get the first pair/pp stud they need. |

If they can get him under 5 mill then they have to be almost stupid not to. That's a bargain. Let someone else over pay for Suter. |

That extra 2Mil is a depth forward or even 2.

How do you figure that Carle is a 2nd pair D man? And that those 3 players are all ahead of him on the depth chart?
There are no facts to support those statements.

If they're paying Ryan Suter $7mm, how do they fit the first pair stud? Because while Ryan Suter is a Helluva nice defenseman, he's not a first pair stud or elite defenseman. |

4-4.5
Carle for anywhere in that price range is acceptable. Im not quite ready to move on from Kubina. Hes still a very, very good dman. If healthy, id love it if he were brought back. The price would have to be right as well, obviously. |

Coburn got 4.5M. Carle is worth more. We'll see what Carle is willing to accept and sign for. I don't think Kubina can be classified as a very, very good dman anymore. He is solid veteran who would be an upgrade over Gustafsson or Lilja at this point. But I wouldn't label him as you have. |

Obviously by your statement that Grossmann, Meszaros, and Coburn are all ahead of Carle on the depth chart. And you don't recognize him as anymore then a jack of all trades 2nd pair defenseman. There is a clear bias there. But if your choosing between either player, it would depend on what type of player your looking for. What qualities does your team need on the back end.

He can still log meaningful minutes, basically all i was getting at.
Not quite a top 4 guy anymore, but id consider him an "above average, bottom pairing dman".
We have the same view on him i feel like, i probably just worded it a bit awkward. |

I'd rather have Carle and the extra $2mm to spend on other needs. Shelley and Carle aren't a package deal. Shelley can be sent to the AHL if cap room is needed.
So Carle for $5mm or Suter for $7mm....I'd take Carle every time at that rate.
If Suter signed here for $7mm, he'd be despised by January, because idiots would expect him to be Duncan Keith or Nick Lidstrom. |

I think he's going to have a really strong season next year. From what he's saying the distractions took a lot out of him mentally and hurt his focus. He seems to be much more in tune with things now and I think he will thrive. |
