At the end of the last series there were flyer fans bragging about how they averaged 5 goals a game and that they won't have to worry about playing against a good goalie as no one was even close to 3 goals a game.
Broduer didn't even have to be average, he just had to be there to stop that high powered offense. - Oilhab
No.
The Devils defense was there to baffle the Flyers' high powered offense.
Seriously...in games 2-5 total, how many HIGH QUALITY scoring chances did Philly have?
In 4 games...maybe what? 10?
Marty was not tested. He wasn't at all. And when he was tested with shots that weren't called "high quality chances" he looked like he was fighting the puck.
On the other hand, Bryz was spectacular and was keeping his team in games, making momentum saves at key junctures.
This is why I'm saying that Bryz was on par AT LEAST with Marty. |

I don't so much hate the Rangers as a team. There are a lot of players on the team that I admire, starting with their captain, several defensemen, a couple of particularly likeable ex-Flyers (Fedotenko and Biron), and Lundqvist.
However, I personally dislike their coach and their GM. Tortorella is a bully of a coach. Overall, I think he's a good coach -- very good with Xs and Os and getting favorable matchups. But his hubris gets in the way sometimes. He is so convinced of his own genius that he's actually gotten in the way of his own team's success more than once both in Tampa and New York.
Sather is still living off the reputation of building 1980s Edmonton dynasty an has made more bad than good decisions in the last quarter century. I find Slats' insufferable much of the time.
I also dislike the misplaced haughtiness of a large percentage of the fan base. This is a team that has one Stanley Cup since 1940, is 18 years removed from the last one and still has yet -- although they still very well may do so after Game 7 -- to advance past the second round since 1997.
Finally, I think the New York media (as well as Canadian) were the ones who created and still perpetuate the image of the Flyers' team as a goon squad . They also love to play up the boorishness of Philadelphia fans, when there is equal percentage of idiots -- and a larger number because of the sheer size of their metro area -- in New York.
So there you have it. I respect the Rangers as a team but I can never root for them under any circumstances.

Actually Davies.
All I did was bring up that I disagreed with Meltzers point that Bryzgalov was equal and at times better than Broduer in the series. I've been quite civil in giving my reasons why I thought that.
However......apparently becuase the Leafs missed the playoffs, I don't know a thing about hockey.

I didn't say all, i said there were, if those people are not here then the comment is irrelevant, was just curious to see how they would defend their previous statements.

Forgive the silly question, but if Timmonen is looking to stick around after this contract, can they tear this one up and renegotiate a deal that would lower Kimmos cap hit for next year? It'd be foolish for Kimmo since he's due a big number next year, but Im just talking in "theory". |

Howard has been good so far this morning. Although I think he's looking for a reason. I suspect this afternoon I'll give him one. |

Whether the Leafs missed the playoffs or not is irrelevant. But to say that Bryzgalov wasnt on par or slightly better than Brodeur at times in this series is being biased imo. Brodeur faced about half the "quality scoring chances" that Bryzgalov did. I dont ever recall the Devils going almost 15+ mins without even registering a shot on goal (Flyers I believe did that twice). The attack time in the Flyers end was much higher than in the Devils end. The Devils dominated the play in this series and when that happens you tend to score more goals. |

from the Bryz interview:
Did a wish ever come up to tell everything where to go? To ask for a trade, slam the door?
I am not one of those people. I will not give in when facing difficulties. I have eight more years to work under my contract with Philadelphia. If I am criticized, then I will endure it. You can't tie up people's tongues. It is their right to let the emotions go.
Hard not to like the guy.
I agree with everyone that said he could have had a better year.
But he is here for 8 more years, and we have to hope he can work and improve to make his game better and more consistent.
Transition years are always tough. Hopefully next season looks like March of this year, from Oct through a long playoff run. |

Flyers = High powered offense with a goalie making specatcular saves keeping his team in games
Devils - good defense with an untested goalie who fumbles pucks
Something doesn't add up here.
A good defense can stump an offense sure, but a high powered offense should be able to find a way to get to a goalie who doesn't seem comfortable.
Was the problem coaching or is the offense only high powered when the net is empty and the defense is as porous as their own?

The devils were ready and flyers weren't. Marty was untested, but sharp. The devils knew how to beat the flyers and never looked back. This series wasnt lost or won by the goalies, so I don't get why it's even being debated this much.
The devs relentless forecheck and tireless puck pursuit in all three zones is much more worthy and relevant to talk about. |

So flyers coaching then, they were unable to adapt or did not do any research.
It's not like the Devils haven't played this way all year. |
