I think the Flyers should really go after Suter hard. He is the only d-man on the market that qualifies as a #1 guy. Even if it is a 1A. After Timonen's contract expires next year, Suter's cap hit would essentially replace Kimmo's. Putting all the eggs in the Weber basket is definitely risky, and if the Flyers aren't successful in landing him, they would be left without a top guy barring a trade.
We have seen this current d-core the last two years without Pronger in the playoffs and it wasn't exactly stellar. Bringing back the same group isn't the best of ideas imo. - PLindbergh31
Don't know if these numbers are true but I been reading articles around the net saying the Flyers should go around 11 years and 62M. 5.6M Cap hit. I dont know if that will work. Just laying it out there. |

The flip side is that signing Suter could very well take them out of the Weber sweepstakes if he becomes available. And Suter although a very good player, isn't what most thinks he is. |

right, they need a star. suter would be worth it, imo. the weber scenario would totally be dependent on the price. |

Rumor has it that Lamerillo will find a way to give Parise Kovalchuck money.

11 years is insanity. I know more years means a lower cap hit, but that is way too long of a contract. |

If it takes them out of the Weber sweepstakes so be it, granted Suter isn't close to the player Weber is, but if they don't sign Suter, and are unable to land Weber where does that leave them? Without a # 1 guy. |

Yes a deal that is front loaded with low years on the back end that lowers Parise's Cap hit to in the 6M range can be duplicated. There are numerous examples of existing deals that prove that it can be duplicated. All they have to do is abide by the new rules in place. - MJL
As a possible comparison, Brad Richard signed a 9 year deal @ $60 million. In the first 6 years, $57 million was paid out in the contract for a cap hit of $6.67. My assumption whoever Parise signs with, a deal will be similiar in structure. Richards received $24 million in the first two years alone. The Flyers have the financial resources to do this, I'm not sure the Devils do. |

Parise as a Flyer would be interesting.
Honestly, I'd rather the Flyers just make simpler changes this off-season then explore anything of the drastic variety.
The UFA crop for next off-season is looking phenomenal. We will have Hartnell and Timonen coming off the books, as well as Shelley and Bob. That's nearly 13 million in cap space. Two d-men I know off the top of my head who are FA's next off-season: Vlasic and Enstrom. With the kind of cap-space were talking and our youth up front, we have a ton of money to spend on D. Realistically, we could acquire both (their are some other interesting names. can't get on capgeek. blocked at work for me right now for some reason).
I understand that players will sign extensions by then, but even if a handful of players do between now and then (which is up and the air with the situation at hand with the CBA, but so is a season altogether), the UFA crop this summer will pale in comparsion to the mass of talent available next summer.
Simply put, I'd rather the Flyers hold off on spending any serious coin this summer. Save the space when more intriguing players are available. Resign Carle to a deal south of 5 mill, sign one of Daniel Paille or Travis Moen (as long as it's within reason), explore the signing of a Coliacavo or even trading for a dman on a soon to be expiring contract like Jordan Leopold.

Basically his contract would end at the same age as Timonen. I don't like long term deals like that either unless its for a Weber. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Carle, Timonen, Nashville FAs - bmeltzer
I was happy to hear that Holmgren feels that a deal can be struck with Carle. Despite his well discussed flaws, he is a very solid defenseman, who brings a lot to the table.
Ryan Suter might be a better defenseman, but we have people that female dog and moan over salaries for role players and back-up goalies. I can imagine how much anger Suter would draw with a $7mm hit..
It's funny seeing people rip Holmgren for short sighted contracts and overpaying players and then demand that they overpay Suter.

Who knows if Weber even gets to free agency. A team could blow Nashville out of the water with a trade offer. We know Suter will be a UFA come July 1, Weber is a year + from becoming a UFA, and who knows if the Flyers would even have a legitimate shot at obtaining him. |

And signing Parise as a UFA on JUly 1, the deal won't be under the new CBA. It will be signed under the existing CBA and the current rules, - MJL
I don't think that is how it works. On the last CBA, I believe the new contract superseded previous agreements and allowed for new arrangements, such as contract buy outs.

Thats also an option. They could just trade one player and a pick for a 3rd pairing type player. Being that they also sign Carle. I really have to clue what Homer plans to do. |

John Boruk is a (frank)ing retard for suggesting that. I would really hope that the Flyers don't considered that kind of deal, and I like Suter.
The FA market is just too thin. Far better to look at the trade route. |

Your incorrect. The Flyers would be signing Parise under the current CBA and it's rules. They will not even start negotiations for the new CBA at that point. |

I think the moves will be as simple as signing Suter, or Carle, adding another top 6 d-man, and adding a 4th line checking center to enable Couturier to move up into a more prominent offensive role. That will probably be the extent of it, but with Holmgren who knows.

They aren't the only two top defenseman in the League. I'm starting to lean towards Suter not being worth the contract that I think it will take to sign him.

That is my lone hang-up. He's a damned good defenseman, no question he would be a nice asset to plug in and have play 20-25 minutes a night. He would immediately be the team's best defenseman.
That said, other defensemen, just as good and cheaper, could possibly be had going the trade route.
That said, I don't object coming back with the same cast. A large part of teh defensive issues came from poor play from the forwards. |

I think Suter's PP ability is being underrated by some. I wouldn't be willing to go to 7 per season, but I think he's worth the 6.2-6.5 range. |
