Oh Canada
Hey Engles,
Have you ever played hockey? Gomez was not the greatest trade the habs have made or during Gainey's tenure, however, it is by far not the 2nd worst trade ever in habs history. In my humble opinion, there have been several inadequate transactions that readers have stated, Chelios being far far worst.
Honestly, the year Scott Gomez arrived, the Canadiens had their best post-season in 17 years!!! Make no mistake, Gomez played a key role, look at his stats in the playoffs Eric! Our current captain signed because of him, so did Cams!! A little bit more professional journalism would give you more credibility.
Higgins is a bust(Koivu made him a 25+ scorer one yr) McDonough is a 6th defenseman on an average NYR team. Most Habs fans, and I haven't lost much sleep over those two, and of course Mr. Valentenko!
Don't blame the astute Gainey here, blame the overwhleming Quebec provincial taxes, language police and the cruel media & fan base that negates any top level talent to play here anymore. Collectively, there is your answer easy EE!
regards,
sports fan since the 70s.

You have to remember that at that time, we hadn't seen him play, he'd been in college and didn't seem interested in making the jump...and we believed what the medias were saying about him (which they got from the habs themselves).
It just goes to show you that the habs didn't know how to handle a player once they'd drafted him...hopefully this'll change.

I disagree with the bolded.
Trading a prospect out of Montreal is the best thing they could have done for his development.

I'm not saying it was a good deal...some just rationalized it by what they were fed from the media...
I remember thinking "it's probably not as bad as we think...". I remember being absolutely wrong.

The $ involved with Gomez is sketchy as (frank) to begin with but the term was the ultimate dagger. |
