I was thinking that an interesting scenario would be
To EDM: 2012 1st rounder (3rd overall)
To MTL: 2012 2nd rounder (31st overall), 2013 first rounder
Edmonton obviously throws in a 2nd rounder this year in order to swap those picks. Oilers first rounder next year will probably be quite a bit lower, but it is considered a deeper draft.
This gives the Oilers a chance to draft Yakupov and Murray. If Columbus drafts Murray, the Oilers can either go with Dumba or take Galyenchuk who played with Yakupov in Sarnia last year. They should be able to acquire a top pairing defenseman with their core of young forwards. Oilers have been rebuilding for a few years and are ready to make a jump. An extra 2012 first rounder would benefit them more than their 2013, especially since it is 3rd overall.
Montreal is taking a risk by giving up a 3rd overall pick, but this draft is considered very weak after Yakupov. Some guys are ranked from #2 - #20, depending on which scout you talk to. Getting an extra 2013 in a very deep draft would give them another shot at McKinnon if the Oilers happen to fail again this year (I highly doubt this, though). This also gives the Habs three 2nd rounders this year and could possibly find a gem.
Also, if there is a lockout next year and no NHL games are played, then the Oilers and Habs would be right at the top for the odds to draft McKinnon. Getting two of McKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Shinkuruk, Barkov would be amazing. |

Even if the Oilers finish middle of the pack next year, then guys like Domi, Rychel, Erne, Pulock would probably all go Top 10 or better in this years draft. |
