Is Pittsburg gonna low-ball him?
- robin_steele264

Is Crosby going to squeeze them for every penny or take a pay cut like he did last time?

I said he could command 7 mill... not sure Id want that on the Oil considering their own cap in the future.

Getting 130 million dollars over 15 years is hardly a bad deal especially with 14 million dollars for the first 5 years.

Crosby wont want a retirement contract.

Time to cash in, he's done enough for them.

Of course, with his concussion history, he wouldn't want a long term guaranteed contract....

Sure he won't. He's in a city where he's a walking God, plays for a team that gives him a chance to win every year and for a team he's made sacrifices for before.

You could make the argument that Malkin will one day go the route of Jagr in Pittsburgh but Crosby is the second coming of Lemieux. He's a lifer.

Hilariously unlikely. Richards and Toews, both very comparable players with more offensive ability got 5 to 6 million in cap hit.

Salary and cap hit are two different things. Don't forget it.

Meh, lots of things can happen over time. Crosby'll be able to get paid in lots of different places, he'll at least think about his options. It's actually much more rare than common for athletes to stay with one team their whole careers.

Speaking of which, isn't it crazy with Washington and Ovie...you get this guy, one of the best players in the world, your team rips it up for a couple of years, then in the playoffs your best guy is actually playing LESS to help the team. Who would have predicted the path of the Capitals this year? Shows just how hard it is to win and how things can change.

Ovechkin became one of the best offensive players in the world because he played in a wide open system that allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Because of that, he averaged 50 goals a year. But it didn't win.

The only reason why Ovechkin playing less correlates with "helping" the team is because he is a defensive liability. And defense wins in the playoffs. If Ovechkin was more defensively reliable, he would play more and the team would win.

Yeah, this is the thing. It just shows, these long contracts in a cap system are risky. Ovechkin is still one of the best, but he hasn't been head and shoulders above a pretty long list of other guys the last couple of years. Maybe he'll get to a complete game the way Yzerman did, but it's kind of scary...you have to be careful who you go all-in with...I think if anyone said Ovie would have these kind of splits and the Capitals would back into the 8th spot this year they'd be laughed at.

Among the 18 players who have a cap hit of 7 million per year, show me the one that signed it at a point in their career where their career highs were 29 goals and 50 points.

You keep saying Staal can command 7 million dollars and yet keep forgetting to stipulate whether that's salary or cap hit. Salary is possible, cap hit is laughable unless somebody signs him to a Gomez contract.

This was the first time in Ovechkin's career where he became serious about winning. Up until now, he's been about having a good time. He's worried about being a showman more than a winner. He has all the talent in the world. It's his attitude and his work ethic that will determine whether or not he does anything with it.

I wouldn't be so sure about himb being all serious. There was that poop during the Allstar break, plus that Russian interview awhile back. Whose to say he didn't walk into the front office after game 7 and say, "It's Hunter or me".

If he played 15 minutes a game 5 years ago, you think he would have handled it the same way he handled it this year? He got Bruce fired because he held him off the ice. Under Hunter he changed a little. Can't expect him to do a 180 over night but Hunter left on his own terms, not because of Ovechkin.

You think Pit will sign both Crosby and Staal to 15 year retirement contracts? Both those guys are young so that's the only way they'll get a break on the cap hit.

If Staal signs a 4, 5 or 6 year contract I'd say 6-7 is the range depending on what happens in the new CBA.

Give Crosby the 15 yr deal and Staal a shorter term (or trade him) and wait to see what happens with Malkin.

Yup, and I think it's also an indication that the league is so tight and there are so many talented guys that there isn't a small group of guys that tower of the league year after year like a Gretzky or Lemieux. Which is great, because no one is a huge favourite.

I just read it today and thought it'd be an interesting discussion, considering the way salaries are escalating, its certainly not that crazy to think he could command 7 mill.
