Good for you. You read it. Do you believe it? The fact that you keep bringing it up suggests you believe it despite there being very little logic behind it. Not to mention from a flimsy and speculative source. - Unholy_Goalie
Staal will fall in the 5.25 to 5.75 range for 5 years, no more than that. |

Doesnt make a lick of a difference when he's a UFA with 15 teams bidding on him. - robin_steele264
You sure there won't be 30 teams bidding on him? Maybe he'll make 30 million dollars a year after each team tries to one up each other.

6 years, 36 million dollars would be fair for both him and the Penguins. They get him until he's 30, he gets 6 million a year for being a great two-way, 50-60 point center and he gets another shot at being a UFA to get another contract at the mid point of his career. |

Off topic, but the Rangers make me sick. Reminds me of the Jauques Lamaire days, in New Jersey. Keep it at 0 - 0 for as long as it takes for your opponent to make a mistake, then get a lead and sit on it, until it hatches. It's disgusting to watch, with very little entertainment value. |

Yeah
Supply and demand. How often does a young centerman of his caliber become available?

They've got tough choices. Like I said, 40 mill commited in 13-14 without Crosby or Staal signed.

How often do 50 point centers get 7 million dollar per year cap hit deals? |

Almost 40 mil tied up in 8 players? Yeah I think they can kiss Staal good bye. |

How often are they traded for the 1st overall + as you suggest?

One pretty close to home got 5.5 as a 2nd line C... Feasible that Staal with a higher pedigree, cup and the ceiling of a potential 1st line C could get 7. You know damn well Burke would do it. |

Don't be mad just because you can't get Staal for Gagner. |

10 players.
Make it 50 mill for 11 with Crosby signed to an extension.
Staal likely going bye bye. Or Malkin, but I doubt it.

As I said earlier, only a moron or a desperate GM would sign Staal to a 7 million dollar cap hit deal. He qualifies as both. |

Yeah because there's no way they could possibly move Kunitz, Martin, Michalek or any other player to make cap room.
There's also no way the new CBA changes anything.

The only guy they would give a retirement contract to is Crosby because he means everything to that franchise and their fans. Even if they never win a Cup again, Crosby keeps that arena filled.
Staal would get a shorter contract because this is his 2nd contract. He's 24 this year so maybe close to a 6 year deal at 36 million. Keeps his cap hit at 6 or less and they keep him until he's 30.
I've always thought that Malkin was the guy they would eventually trade if and when they needed to do it. Given that Columbus is trying to rebuild and offload Nash, I'd look at them as a good trading partner. You keep Malkin in the opposite conference, get a winger for Crosby, plus A LOT more to bridge the value gap between Nash and Malkin. Plus, they keep Staal. - Unholy_Goalie
That's right...trade arguably the best player in the game today for a 59pt winger who's cap hit is about $1MM less...
You're brilliant. |

They don't need to move anyone....haven't you heard? All the Pitt players are going to take discounts to play with each other... |

That's right, Rick Nash is coming to Toronto for Franson, Kulemin and a 2nd as you suggested.

They'd be insane to move Malkin. With Crosby's future still up in the air...Malkin has been (and will be) the reason this team has remains competitive. |
