I'm not sure what their rules are on how much the annual contract is allowed to drop at the end of the deal but just roughly off the top of my head, they give him his money and get their desired cap hit. He's 25 and they sign him until he's 40.

Ovechkin got his deal when he was scoring 50 to 60 goals a year. And it wasn't spread out over 10 years either. The second contract these superstars receive are always going to be shorter with a higher cap hit. The third contract however, can and will be much longer.

It's pretty obvious. If you were the Penguins and you had to sign Crosby, would you really eat a 10 million dollar per year cap hit and risk having to trade away other players? Hell no. They're going to lock up their core players, to reasonable deals and keep the cap hits as low as they can.

Getting 130 million dollars over 15 years is hardly a bad deal especially with 14 million dollars for the first 5 years.
