It's not a very conducive style to staying healthy that's for sure. They have a horseshoe up their ass this year it appears. I think the stars are aligned for them to win the Cup.
I find it amusing when their fans are described as 'long suffering" That phrase is repeated ad nauseum here on TV and radio here in the NJ/NY metro area. It's comical. - PLindbergh31
yea "long suffering" might be a valid description |

They have had some miserable years under Sather, but they did win a Cup in 1994. That's not ancient. It's in the players wore helmets, and advertisements on the boards era. |

beyond that one year the Flyers have never really had too many miserable years versus other teams. This is a general statement. When the other teams sucked so bad they got a a top ten pick. |

says it all right there
Messier still had plenty left in the tank in 94, Richter got hot Vancouver did what they're good at This year is just an anomaly imo. I can't see how they don't avoid injury the way they do blocking shots like that. Oh well they haven't won it yet though, still think NJ can wear them down, we'll see. |

It's also their ONLY cup since 1940. This year marks the first time since 1996-97 that they've made it to the Conference Final and there was that long stretch of missing the playoffs in between.
There's only one still-active player -- Alexei Kovalev, who looked finished in the KHL this year -- from the last Cup team.
So I do think long-suffering is a good adjective.

I think they deserve more suffering. Lundqvist groin pull anyone? |

Maybe it is, they have been non-competitive for long stretches for sure, but fans of my age group have seen them win a Stanley Cup. I just want to see one. |

By "lucky horse shoe" do you mean "and his consistently year after year top stats regardless of the team in front of him"? |

I'm in the same boat, but I like being in the playoffs every year, sooner or later the fates have to smile upon the Flyers. I hear people say they'd sacrifice x amount of winning seasons for a cup but I unno, I went through the dark ages with the phillies and saw them win a world series ( I was too young to remember the other time) but now that they stand on the brink of darkness again ugh I don't know if I can stand another decade of misery.
For me the Flyers have given me every memory a fan could ask for save one. The memory of 5 losing seasons missing the playoffs has me thankful that they are where they are, and I can't fall into that rut of regret yet. Seen a game 7 SCF's, got to game 6 of another, a 3-0 series comeback, with all the winning seasons, I'll gladly not tempt fate and complain they haven't won one. This probably alienates me from several others but I'd rather be able to know every hockey season I'll be happy for most of the 8 months than not.
I want to win a cup bad, but I'm not going to downplay all the great things this franchise has accomplished through the years. Besides as this team stands, with Giroux, Couturier, Schenn etc. I think we'll have a cup in the next five years. YOu just can't have that deep of a team and not succeed and imo this is the deepest I have seen a Flyers team since the 1980's. Let's face it, the legion of doom years was a one line show. Whenever Lindros went down it was season over. That ain't the case anymore. Holmgren has this team going in the right direction and I'm not about to let the sting of this season's conclusion blind me of that. |

Another huge day (1 G, 3 A) for ex-Flyer Patrick Thoresen at the World Championships today. He has 10 points (4 G, 6A) in the last two games alone and has taken over the tournament scoring lead from Evgeni Malkin.
Thor's performance was a no-brainer choice for my weekly Across the Pond article at NHL.com this week.

Ive always liked him, and his nut shot blocking ability, but he is not, and never will be, NHL material. |

You misread the conversation.
The lucky horse shoe had to do with the massive number of shots blocked without significant resulting injury.
Flyers who do that tend to end up with injuries. In the case of Lappy, a career ending one. In the case of many others, broken feet.
EDIT: Oh, I see Marc's post. Well, I have NO idea what HE was thinking!? |

Tougher players than most other teams or they drank a lot of milk growing up.
Either way you put it, they play through a lot of bumps and bruises. That isn't lucky at all. They have played this style for more than just this season.
