I hope they don't trade JVR simply as a salary dump. The only way I trade him is for bonafide NHL player, IMO. I just wouldn't want to lose him to make salary room. Not sure that's what you were suggesting, just my opinion.
- funmaster18

for me it would have to be for a younger (under 30) top defenseman

wouldn't trade him otherwise

It wouldnt be purely a salary dump if it was up to me. I would want to get a top draft pick this year so I can impove my defense, while using the extra money to sign Suter.

I agree. If you can't get that, keep him another year. I still think he will be a monster.

I wouldnt do that. First, because there is no guarantee that pick develops into anything while we already see JVRs potential and secondly, because there's no guarantee we can sign Suter. would hate to lose JVR for a draft pick and cap space.

unless you trade for Suter's rights... Agree to a deal with him like you did bryz... then trade JVR.

What would you have to give up for his rights?

Any word on Simmer's mysterious disappearance in the playoffs? Its one thing if a player loses scoring confidence. Its another if he suddenly disappears along the boards.

I'll check on Simmonds, you find out why the rest of the team did the same.

Thoresen is a much better offensive player than any of them. In the NHL, he didn't have much offensive confidence. If he were to return to the NHL, it would not surprise me one iota if he became a good secondary scorer for some team in addition to being a good PK player.

It's not unprecedented for NHL role players to go to Europe, rediscover their scoring touch and parlay it into a successful return to the NHL for a few years.

For example, Ville Peltonen was out of the NHL for 5 years (and never had more than 6 goals in an NHL season) before reviving his career in Europe with HC Lugano and Finland's Jokerit Helsinki. Upon his return to the NHL, he scored 17 goals in his first campaign with the Florida Panthers. Much like Thoresen, Peltonen had been a top-end scorer everywhere BUT the NHL.

Was speaking at the NHL-level. I'm sure a guy like Powe would score a bunch in Europe.

He was the worst imo. I saw flashes of effort/passion from others. Just flashes, mind you, but from him I saw nothing except that goal on Fleury. Maybe that was the move Lavy kept thinking he would show on the shootouts.

Huge disappointment to date, JVR.

If Holmgren can get back the 2nd overall pick, I'm all for it.

I don't see calling JVR a huge disapointment as being particularly fair.

I like Bogo a lot, he has a lot of potential. Just not sold that he'll be an offensive force -- may end up more like Coburn.

So if I'm giving up Schenn, I want more.

Unless you want to overlook the fact that he missed 39 games to injury this year, then it's totally fair.

IMO, that's a good way to turn into a big-market version of the Edmonton Oilers. You need a mix of veterans -- including A couple ones in their mid-30s -- and young players in key roles. Too much youth equals flashes of potential but inability to compete with the big boys.

Also, there is no one the Flyers could bring in with that cap space who would produce as much in big games as Briere, or have a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in Philadelphia (or have more appreciation for playing and living here, either).

the diversity I'm always preaching. Youth, mid-career guys, old heads. You need all three. And you need grit guys, skill guys, and crossover guys. speedy guys and steady guys. Upbeat guys and serious guys. It's a puzzle for a GM, but when he gets it right, it makes for a real team team.

Imagine if we only had a decent training staff so our team wouldn't be riddled with injuries every year. Maybe we can pry away the wizards and warlocks that work for the Rangers to help out.

you didn't miss anything.

There's probably a dozen guys with similar potential, pedigrees and skill sets to Shattenkirk and Bogosian that I would be in favor of acquiring.

Some I like more than others, and I'd prefer to keep Schenn, but I wouldn't grill Holmger for trading him for one.

Great points, Bill. I can't imagine trading Briere or letting him go. That guy's such a big keeper on this team right now. You don't just get rid of guys who are money in the playoffs, unless your primary goal is to be just a regular season force like San Jose. Guys who are clutch in the playoffs will always have a spot on my team. I don't understand how that's lost on some people.
