He is great against Columbus.. not so great against the other 28 teams is the point. And unless there is a miracle in the next year, Columbus won't be in the playoffs.. one of the other 28 teams will be.

Ok, so you don't particularly like the player... that's fine... objectively:

Strengths:
-Best skater in the NHL or way the heck up there
-6'3 210 kind of a big deal with the size
-good wrist shot, not great but good
-good stick handling ability, again not great but good
-production increased every year in the league
-decent strength on the puck, showed flashes of Hossaesque holding off players

Weakness:
-defensive zone lapses, showed improvement though so its a build
-sometimes loses control skating and gets to close to the net killing his angle
-makes bad decisions at blue line on occasion

If you are a GM and think you have a "good" coaching staff that can build on those assets for 875,000... It's a pretty easy sell. Especially for a team looking for speed and a mostly polished NHL product.

i think he could use a little better decision making. perhaps that comes with age/experience. he takes a lot of stupid penalties and makes a lot of mistakes in/near the neutral zone. his speed is something to behold and if he can just get that killer instinct, he could be dynamite

I can see this but hes still young and has size to he's hard to take of the puck I think he can be one of the valuable roll players that we lost a few years back if we get GOOD return send him on but i think he fits here

Wow, just looked it up - Lucic and Claude Giroux came out of that draft too.
- RickJ

Yep...Giroux was an example of a bad story out on his willingness to play hurt...

Hmm...was a great pick by Philly.

That's the key to the 'Hawks keeping him. I would like to see him step it up on the physical side though. He ain't small and if he plays a strong positional game, an uptick on the physical side would sure go a long way.

Gotta wonder if he's still with the team going into camp and depending on the CBA, roster, payroll level, if the 'Hawks wouldn't try to extend him a couple years at a modest cap hit.

If the Hawks decide to hang onto Stalberg...Myt bet is they will push hard for an extension.

Stop putting words in my mouth, I am netural on 25. If he gets traded great, if he stays great.. He isn't a TOP 6 IMO, which means he is Bottom.. for his salary and production I am fine with him.

Signing Stalberg to an extension would be tricky, what would be his fair market value? If he's a 20-25 goal scorer then he'd get $2.0-$2.5 million easy and I'd be fine paying that.

And if he doesn't score that many, congratulations on adding another Frolik to the roster - minus the ability to play physically.

Time to shop Stals to a team that has the luxury of time to develop his potential - what ever that may be.

I know, that's why I said signing Stalberg is tricky.

I'm ok with keeping one of Stalberg or Frolik, but I don't think there's enough space for both of them on the roster. Frolik is more well rounded and what we see now is likely what we get. Frolik is offensively focused and we don't know if he has reached his potential. So who would you keep? Right now Stalberg may bring the better return, and that's always a factor.

Frolik is also 2 years younger than Stalberg, that should factor in as well.

True, I could live with either being traded but if I had to choose I'd keep Frolik. The Hawks bottom 6 needs more help than the top 6 and Frolik fills that role much better. Also, at the end of Frolik's contract the Hawks still owns his rights and that's always a plus from an asset management perspective.
